UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. WHEELER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE WHEELER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF
SAME PLACE.
DESIGN- FOR A BICYCLE-SADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 34,073, dated February 12, 1901.
Application filed December 26, 1899. berial No. 741,678. Term of patent '7 years.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Bicycle-Saddles, of which the following is a specification, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to anew and original design for a bicycle-saddle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my design for a bicyclesaddle. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the design as on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 isa transverse section through the design as on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
The leading feature of my design consists in abroad flaring seat portion whose under face is substantially flat in cross-section and presents an unbroken surface and whose upper face is rounding at its margins and curves downwardly, joining the flanged margin of the under face in forming a depending marginal head, said seat portion having a reduced forwardly-extending pommel slightly tapering and rounded on its upper surface, but fiat on its under face, and having a sharp downward curve at its extreme forward end. The rear of the saddle curves sharply upward,so that its extreme edge stands in a plane nearly at a right angle to the upper surface of the saddle. The rear of the saddle is rounded and at the center is curved inwardly, describing a long even reverse curve. Leading from the inwardly-curved rear portion is an oblong central depression formed in the upper surface only of the saddle, which extends forward to the base of the pommel. The bottom of said depression is substantially flat and without perforation, and the walls thereof on each side incline sharply upward to the surface of the saddle, which surface curves outwardly and downwardly from said depression to the margin of the saddle on each side. The central depression at the rear margin of the saddle flares outwardly, forming rounded turns.
A designates the rounded seating-surface of the saddle on each side of the central depression B.
C designates the rounded tapering pommel, which stands above the plane of the depression B and is provided with a downwardlycurved nose CL and a flat under face I.
D designates the u pwardly-turned rear edge of the saddle.
E designates the outwardly-flared portion of the depression communicating with the ob long portion B and merging into the rear curve of the seat portion. F designates the fiat bottom of said depression, and e the upwardly-extending inclined sides thereof. A line of stitching b traverses the central depression B and from the outer opening of said depression continues around the margin of the saddle, as shown at c.
G designates the under face, which is substantially flat transversely and extends in a straight horizontal line between the side margins of the saddle, having the depending bead J, and H designates the aprons depending from the opposite sides of the pommel, the whole presenting to the eye an ornate and harmonious figure, as shown in the drawings.
Having thus fully set forth my design, what I claim is- The design for a bicycle-saddle, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. FVHEELER.
