(Application filed Sept. W9.)
W/T/VESSES. A lNVE/VTOH A TTOHNE I.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK J. DIAOONT, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR, TO THE H. H. CURTIS COMPANY, OF NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR A BRUSH-BACK OR SIMILAR ARTICLE;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design no. 31,705, dated October 24, 1899; Application filed September 2'7, 1899- Serial no. 731,868. Term of patent 3% years.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. DIACONT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented and produced a certain new and original Design for the Back of a Brush or Similar Article, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Figure I is a plan view of a brush back, showing my new design. Fig. II is a central vertical section of the same.
The ornamentation of the handle B begins with a shield a, supported by inwardly-disposed scrolls b b, which embrace a conventionalized beaded stalk c, that expands downwardly in the form of foliates and foliated scrolls. Embracing the shield at on either side rise stalks g g, entwined with tendrils and extending upwardly to the base of the body ornamentation. These stalks, in conjunction with the rows of spherical beading 71 2' below, afford a beaded contour for the entire handle ornamentation. The crest of the shield bears a flower j, from which project upwardly a mass of leaves and buds.
The brush-body A contains a central escutcheon 0, encompassed on all sides by a mass of floral, scroll, shell, and bead ornamentation, disposed substantially as follows: Below the escutcheon is an oblong plain ornament d, from which spring on either side upwardly and inwardly directed scroll series 6 e, interlaced with smaller foliated scrolls. 5 Beneath d are converging shell ornaments h, embracing a flower 70, which is surrounded by leaves and buds. Above the escutcheon rests a flower Z, forming the base of right and left scrolls surmounted by a tripart crest m, whence spring downwardly-directed scrolls n n with several intermediate branches p 1).
Throughout the upper body ornamentation above outlined are interspersed minute scroll and foliate ornaments. The body hasitsouter margin defined by varied circularbead series, the upper ones 8 8 extending on either side to points nearly opposite the escutcheon-top, while the lower series it u extend upwardly along the margin of the lower body ornamen- 5o tation.
A noticeable feature of my design is the bold and pronounced relief of all the parts thereof.
It is apparent that this design is also applicable to mirror-backs and other similar articles.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The design for a brush-back or similar article, as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK J. DIAOONT.
