DESIGN FOR A CHAIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part, of Design No. 23,639, dated September 11, 1894.

Application filed May 17, 1894. Serial No, 511,613. Term of patent 14 years.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that l, FRIEND W. SMITH, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fail-field and 5 State of Connecticut, have invented and produced a new and original Design for \Vire Chains; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled o in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is a view in elevation showing the obverse face of my newly designed chain; Fig.

5 2, a similar view but showingthe reverse face thereof, and Fig. 3, a side elevation.

My design especially relates to a chain the several links whereof are of identical shape and configuration, and the leading feature '0 consists in the curled extremities of the wires which form a chain link, which extremities pass first from the eye of the link within the loop and thence curl around the outside of the side wires of the loop. Looking at the obverse fare of the link the wires at the eye of 25 the link appear parallel for a short distance and thence diverge toward the loop, while the curled ends appear around said wires at the point where the latter diverge and are merged into the loop, and looking at the reverse face, o the wires of the eye appear parallel with each other, while the curled ends appear around the side wires of the loop and approach said parallel wires.

1, is the loop; 2, the eye; 3, the side wires; 4, 5 the parallel wires on the reverse of the eye; 5, the partially parallel and diverging wires on the obverse of the eye, and 6 the curled ends of the wires.

I claim- 40 The design for wire chains, substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings.
