dtencwed December $0, 1912. iierial Filo. iidt'fi'iil To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, MICHAEL E. RYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State -of Connecticut, have invented certain new nents in wire chain links, and has for its object to form a link from-metal so that it will be substantially endless, and at the same time to greatly strengthen the link, and with these e'nds,in view my invention consists in certain methods and details of construction hereinafter fully set forth and then particularly pointed out in the claims Wlil0l1l60l1- elude this description.
In the accompanying drawing Figure -1 is an elevation showing a blank with eyes formed at the ends thereof in accordance with my improvementl ig. 2 is a plan view of a completed link preparatory to the welding operation l ig. 3 aside elevation of such link-Figs. 1 and 5 are plsn views re spectively of obverse and reverse faces of a completely welded link, and Fig.6 an enlarged section at the line a}, w, of Fig. 5.
' Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing;
In carrying out my improvement 1 form eyes 1, 2, at the ends of a suitable wire blank 3 by bending the ends in the arc of a circle and in 'rever e directions. The blank is then bent at its niddle portion so as to form a bow i and to bring the eyes together so that they will be in a plane at right angles to the plane of the how The eyes are then pressed together and welded from the point where one eye joins one side wire 5 of the bow to the point Where the other eye joins the other side wire 6 of said how, this welding being preferably efiected without joining the ends of the Wire to the body of the wire, the weld being denoted b the numeral 7, This will form a link in w .ich the eyes are welded to: gether from the base portion of the eye 1 where it joins integrally the side wire 6 around throughout the circuit of the eyes to the base portion of the eye where it joins integrally the side wire 5, so that the link will be formed from one snbstentially endless: piece of wire the eye ofthe link being of double thickness.
A link made as above described is not only exceedingly strong but insures the saving of considerable wire'which would otherwise be utilized in anchoring the ends of the eyes to the side wires.
In welding together metal parts great trouble is generally experienced with the bur that is incident to the welding, and the Welded articles have to undergo a special treatment such as tumbling in order to remove this bar. lfn my improvement any undue flow of metal is'distributed and taken care of within the space between the outer and inner peripheries of the eyes as is clearly shown at Fig. 6 and it is impossible for any projecting bur to form and therefore no tumbling or other finishing operation is necessar a It is not necessary, in forming the eyes, to
abut the ends ol the e es a 'ainst the bod of the wire, since said ends may be slightly spaced from the wire, itfhein I clear that in both instances after welding t e link will he practically termed from an endless wire of Pittman-loll Agni". Ml, il'tlllsl,
double thickness at the eye portion, and in this connection I would say that any joining of these ends to the body oi" the wire by the operation of welding would be merely incidental.
I do not wish to be understood as claiming the welding of the e e portions of the link together such as con d be effected in the instance or eyes which were formed by bend-., ing the'ends of the blank in the some direc tion since this would not ailord sin endless circuit of the wire, neither do I wish to lie understood as claimingihe manner in which the link itself is formed irrespective oi lweld- 1 in But; r What I do claim as new anddesire to sc- 'cure by Letters Patent isr y chei'n' link comprising a how portion end two eyes disposed sideby the metal gether.
forming the eyes extending in opposite together throughout substantially their eri- 10 directions, and said eyes being welded totire circuit to form a substantially integral i I eye structure. .2.
