Description

(No Model.) E. G. WHEELER.
SATGHEL STRAP.
No. 471,159. Patented Mar. 22, 1892.
INVENTOR WITNESSES:

NITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
EARL G. WHEELER, OF AMSTERDAM, NEIV YORK.
SATCH EL STRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,159, dated March 22, 1892.
Application filed December 28, 1891. serial No. 416,383. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL G. WVHEELER, of Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Satchel-Straps, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to straps for carrying satchels or traveling-bags the ends of which are connected to rings upon the satchel-frame.
My object is to produce an improved satchelstrap composed of links like a chain and with intermediate means for adjustably varying the length of the strap or chain.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the chain as connected to a satchel. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a piece of chain and one of the locks used in adjusting the length of the chain. Fig. 3 is a like View showinga front elevation of the other lock. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of part of the chain and the locks.
Ais the chain, of the style known as safetychain, consisting of two pieces a and Z), detachably and adj ustably connected by the looks a and d, the free ends of said chain being provided with snaps e, which are adapted to be detachably connected to the rings h upon the satchel m.
The look 0 comprises a bar of metal bent and reduced in size adjacent to one end, creating a neck 0, and having the end enlarged, creating a head 0, which lies in a plane substantially parallel to that of the body of said bar, a ring or eye upon the other end, to which the chain is connected, and lugs 0', projecting from the edges of said bar at substantially a right angle thereto and having their ends beveled and bent over, as shown, so that the bent ends lie in a plane substantially parallel to-that of the bar. The head 0" is of such size that it can be inserted edgewise through the slot in a chain-link, and when twisted or turned will lie across said slot, the neck extending through the link. Before turning the head the adjacent links will drop through the diagonal slotway between the arms of the lugs, and then when the bar is turned they will lie under said arms.
The lockd is provided with a neck (1' and a head d oifset from the bar, so as to lie in a plane substantially parallel thereto, and with a ring or eye to which the chain is connected, and is inserted through a link and locked by turning the head across it, the same as the lock 0. It will be readily seen how the bight of the chain can be varied in length by shifting the locks.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a satchel-chain consisting of chainsections, locks detachably and adj ustably connecting the sections, consisting of bars upon the ends of each section, each provided on one end with a neck and head adapted to pass through and engage with a link of the other chain-section.
2. In a satchel-chain consisting of chainsections, locks detachably and adj ustably connecting the sections, consisting of bars upon each section, each provided on one end with a neck and head adapted to pass through and engage with a link, one of said lock-bars being provided with lateral lugs bent transversely to the bar and beveled, as shown.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of December, 1891.
EARL G. WHEELER.
