conma'rrou-ranmr.
Specification 01' Letters Patent.
a pflcmon mm min 20,- 1968. sum 1%. mam.
To all whom it"inay concern:
Be it known that I Lewis W. Mam a tates, residing at Fort Smith, in the county. of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Im' rovements in Combination Tado declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of t "'e invention, such as will enab e ot ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combination furnit'u're and has for its object to provide in a single iece of furniture, a table, a chest and a num er of folding leaves adapted to various pur oses.
Anot er object is to provide in a-combination table and chest, a novel form of'chest lidwhich may serve also for a writing desk or the like.
Another obiect of the invention is to provideia table which may be easily constructed withoutthe use of special tools and which willlbe durable and eflicient in operation.
For these and still other objects which will appear as the descri tion proceeds, the. invention consists of cor ain novel features, arrangements and combinations ofparts-of which the herein described table-is one of many ossible embodiments,
In t e annexed drawing forming a part of this specification like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views which are for illustrative purposes only and therefore not drawn to any particular scale. Y
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form I of the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing this form knocked down ready for shipping or crating; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of another form of the invention; Fig. 4 1s a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the form shown in Fig. 3 certain of the movable parts being in 0 en position and others in closed position; ig. 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, my invention is shown comprising a pair of front legs or supports 1,. a pair of rear egs 2, end chest boards 3 secured to the inner face of said legs, front and rear chest boards 4 and 5, and the top 6. The lower ed e of the inner faces of the end boards 3 and t e front and rear; boards 4 and 5, are grooved as at 7 l for the reception-of a bottom board 8. The
front and rear boards 4 and 5 are secured to the le s 1 and 2 by screws 8 inserted from the outsife and theboards 3 are secured in-any convenientmanner .to said legs as bscrews extending from the inside of said an boards. The legs 4 may be provided with rollers 9L The top 6 is provided with bracing boards or cleats 10 to which the upper end of the legs is secured. Thesecleats 'ma be providied with inner guides or tree ways 11 which may serve to support a drawer 1,2 as shown in Fig. 1. The trackway 11 and drawer 12 may be omitted if desired and only end cleats 10 and side cleats 13 used.
A-lid member 14 is provided for the chest formed by the ends Sand sides 4' and For aurposewhich will appear hereina ter, lid member is provided with links 15 pivoted to the rear end of cleats 16 formed at the ends of and serving to strengthen the lid 14 Patented April 20, 1909.
the
which may be of one continuous ie'ce if deing pulled out .to the position shown in Figs.
1 and 3. Y The cleats 16 are provided with notches 19 adapted to receive the rollers 18 whereby the lid 14 may be yieldably held against movement on said rollers.
The chest and lid may be provided with a. suitable lock or fastening as at 20 and 21 if desired. The form of the invention shown in Fig. 3 is adapted to be provided with additional arts as ironin boards 23 and 24 and a lea 25 as shown. he ironing boards are hinged beneath the ends of the table as at 26 and are provided with stren thening cleats 27 secured to the larger t above the chest and a convenend t ereof by means of turning groove connection as shown in Fi 4. In order to permit the boards 23 an 24 to be placed in either horizontal or folded position, is provided a foldin brace 28 comprising an up er section 29 and a lower section 30 pivota ly connected to each other at 31, the upper section being pivoted to a bracket 32 attached to the ironing board, the lower sec tion being pivoted to the bracket 33 secured to the cross piece 34 passing through the clearly shown in Fig. 4. The lea legs 1 and 2. A lu or the like 35 holds the brace 39 the. other end of said brace being provided with teeth adapted to engage a screw '41 whereby said leaf 25 may be held in horizontal position or may be adjusted to a slanting position tofform a writing desk or device. The outer edge of said leaf 25 may be provided with a scale or yard measure 42.
The operation of my device will be readily understood without a more extended explanation. I 4 f It will be readily seen that the lid 14 is arranged not only. to serve as a closure'for the chest and as a table or desk but is formed of such novel construction that it forms a very convenient and efficient device for permitting easy access to the chest.
An article of furniture constructed in accordance with the above descri tion requires no special material or mac 'nery to manufacture it and at the same time furnishes a number of useful household articles of furniture, combined with very small cost and occupying very small space when closed, which may at a moments notice and with almost no trouble be extended to serve a variety of uses. W 1- It is especially understood that the com mates bination table may manufactured a variety of styles, namely, a table without the ironing board and drop leaf, a table with drop leaf and drawer and no ironing board, a tab e ironing boards and drop leaf all attached. Particular attention is called to the convenient manner in which the table may be knocked down and 'crated.
When the lid 14is drawn up in the position shown in Fig. 1 it forms an exce lent writing desk or servmgtable and may be used to play games and as it extends over the lap is very convenient for many uses. The drop leaf can be lifted to different positions making a handy desk also.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by U. S. LetterS-Patentisz- A device of the character described comprising a chest having legs secured thereto and projecting upwardly therefrom, a board supported u on t e upper ends of said legs a. i for sai chest, said lid being provide with cleatson the lower face near 0' posite edges thereof lin s pivoted at oneten to one e d of said cleats, the o posite ends of said links being pivoted wit 11 said chest, said cleats being provided with notches on the lower edge near said ends thereof, and rollers on two 0 posite legs adapted to be engaged bysai notches.
in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. p
