UNITED STATES fP-ATENT OFFicE.
FRANK P. MUSSER, OF KENT, OHIO,
EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,275, dated, September 18, 1900. Application filed April 4, 1900. Serial No. 11,501. (No modeLl To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, FRANK P. MUSSER, a cii izen of the United States, residing at Kent, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to extension-tablesj and the objects of the same are to provide means for compactly storing the extra leaves of the table when not in use or for shipping and to otherwise provide a simple and eiiicient table of this character having com partments underneath the top for holding the extra leaves when not in use and to permit ready access thereto when desired to extend the table; also, to provide a gravity-latch for the compartments, said latch serving to hold the compartments in line under the table-top and to automatically catch and hold the coin partments in an inclined position when it is desired to remove the leaves.
Another object is to provide means to prevent scratching ormarring the leaves as they are slid in or out of thecompartments; and
still another object is to provide means to open the table at the ends instead of the center for the insertion of the extension-leaves and to also provide for giving a symmetrical appearance to the central when extended.
I attain these objects by means of the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of the table with one of the leaf-compartments tilted into position for removing the leaves. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same with the compartment tilted. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the compartment closed. Fig. 4 is a Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bottom of the table. Fig. 6 is an under side View of afragment of one of the leaves, showing the buffers forpreventing the scratching of the leaves as they are with.- drawn from the compartments.
Like characters designate like parts wherever they occur in the difierent views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates the central top portion of the table portion of the table, and this top is rigidly secured to the rails 2 2, one at each side and underneath the top. The end frames 3 3 are mounted to slide independently of each other on this top, said end frames each consisting of the end strip 4, secured to the end piece 5, and the side pieces 6, secured to the end piece 5. Rigidly secured to the under side of the top 1 of the table is a pairof grooved guide-strips 7 7, and the two end frames 3 3 slide upon these strips by means of the strips 8 8 in a manner which will be readily understood upon referring to the drawings. A cross-brace 9 extends from one strip? to the other and is secured thereto. lross-braces 10 10 connect the side pieces 6 6, and cross-braces 11 11 are secured at their ends to the strips 8 8.
The compartments 12 12 for the extensionleaves 13 consist each of aboX-like structure comprising a bottom 14, sides 15, and one end 16, the other end being left open to permit the leaves to be inserted therein and withdrawn therefrom. These compartments are hinged at 17 to the cross-braces 10, and it will be noticed that the hinges are located nearer one end of the compartment than the other in order that said compartments will tilt to an inclined position when released by the latch 18. This latch is provided with opposite end hooks 19 20 and a slot 21 at one side of the center of the latch in order that when the hook 19 is released from its engage, ment with one edge of the strip 8 it drops and catches the other edge of the strip by its hook 20. 22 and is provided with a stop a.
The leaves 13 are provided upon their under side with buffers 23, of rubber, felt, or similar material, and these buffers serve to prevent one leaf from scratching the other when slid into the compartments.
It will be noticed that when either end frame is extended the rails 2 2 are exposed at the center to form a panel and to give a finished appearance to the table.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that myinvention is simple in construction, of few parts, and can be manufactured at a small cost.
The latch is pivoted on the screw what I claim is my handin presence of two subscribing Wit.- messes.
An extension-table having compartments for theextra leaves, said compartments being hinged under the top of the table at one side of their centers, and gravity-latches for hold- 5 ing said compartments in two positions, sub- Witnesses:
stantially as described. W. W. REED,
FRANK P. MUSSER.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set I W. H. SAMUCH.
