UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. LUF'I, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,065, dated October 29, 1889.
Application filed February 28, 1889- Serial No. 301,502. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY A. LUFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a folding table of a novel construction, as pointed out in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the article when in position to be used as a table. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the article when in position to be used as a cabinet. Fig. 4. is a side view of the same. Fig. 5 is a front view of the same.
Similar letters indicate parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a table-top, which is composed of three sections a b c, the outer side sections a and 0 being connected to the side edges of the middle section by hinge-joints 0, c,respectively, so that they can be folded over upon the upper side of said middle section. The middle section b is connected adjacent to the middle of its length to the rear edge of a top shelf D on the leg-frame B through the medium of hinge-joints b, and on this top shelf are secured brackets C O, which are so arranged that they can be brought in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 or in the position shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. In-the example shown in the drawings said brackets are connected to the top shelf D by hinge-joints 0 hen the article is to be used as a table, the top A is brought into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in this position the brackets C 0 form the supports for the outer sections a c of the table-top. \Vhen the article is to be used as a cabinet, the outer sections a c of the table-top are folded inward upon the middle section b, and this middle section is then turned up to the position shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, in which position it isretained by the brackets C O, the latter being moved from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to that shown in Fig. 3, 4 and 5.
The leg-frame B is provided with shelves E F, similar to and located beneath the top shelf D, on which books or other articles can corresponding be placed, and to the upper shelf D is fitted a drawer G. The brackets C O are so constructed that they do not interfere with the operation of the drawer G, and they perform a do uble function-first, to form supports for the sections a c of the tabletop, and, second, to form stops for bracing the middle section of the table-top in a vertical position, as above explained. By hinging the section b adja cent to the middle of its length, when such section is turned to a vertical position, the lower end portion abuts the leg-frame, and thus the movement of the said section is stopped when it is brought to a vertical position, so that the brackets O, by hearing directly against the section b, brace the latter in its vertical position.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the leg-frame havframe when turned to a vertical position, and
adj ustable' brackets adapted to rest against the leg-frame to support the side sections in ahorizontal position and movable to a position upon the upper side of the top shelf to bear directly against the central section and thereby brace the latter in avertical position, substantially as described.
2. A table consisting of a leg-frame having a series of shelves arranged one above the other, a table-top composed of jointed side sections and a central section hinged, adjacent to the middle of its length, to the edge of the top shelf, and two side brackets hinged, respectively, to opposite edges of the top shelf and adapted to rest against the legframe to support the side sections in a horizontal position and to swing into a position upon the upper side of the top shelf and bear directly against the central section to brace the latter in a vertical position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
