To all whom 'it ma/y concern:

Be it known that we, JAMES HnRvEY Gonsr and' V ELWOOD FAWGETT, of N ew Albany,in.the'county of` Floyd, and State of Indiana, have invented' a new and useful Improvement in` Memo1andun1Books; and we do Vhereby `declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, referencerbeing had to the accompanying drawings, form` ing `parttof this specification.

A This invention relates to a new and'useful improvement in books for keeping memoranda, and for other purposes, and consists, in attaching the book to the cover bymeans of a hinge, of leather, cloth, metal, or other" suitable material, and confining the' saine t0 the cover by a button-fastening,as will b'ehereinafter more fully described.

A is the book-cover. B represents the leaves or pages. i The leaves are properly secured together by stitching, or'othevise, and'attached to the hinge C. This hingeA may be made (pf-leather, or cloth, or other flexible material, or it may be a` metallic hinge, of any suitable kind.

A D is a plate, ofan'y rigid material, which is attached to the hinge, when the hinge is of cloth, leather, or other dexible material. i

, When the hinge is of metal, such plate would, of course, he unnecessary. A

e represents buttons, which are attached `to the cover A.

f represents holes, through whichthe buttons easily pass,.which holes are elongated or slotted, so that when the buttons have been passed through the holes, the Shanks of the buttons will slip up into the slots, and thus securelyhold the'book `tothe cover,las seen in the drawing. i

By slipping down the cover or raising thehinge, the book is'readily detached, and when thefpages are full, f it may be laid away for future reference, while a new book may be inserted. Thus, a single cover is made to answer for an indefinite' number of books. l i f This arrangement is applicable to all kinds of books, but yis. more particularly intended ,for memorandum, music, andlettenbooks, and all booksA of a similar na ture. v
