Description

W. F. EASTMAN.
N10. 184,355. Patented Nov. 14, 1.8765.4
UNITED STATES PATENT EEIc WILLIAM F. EASTMAN, STERLING, ILLINOIS.`
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-BINDING.
l Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. l 84,355, dated November 14, 1876; application filed May 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. EAsTMAN, of the city of Sterling, in the county of VVhitesides and State oflllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book- Binding; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertain's to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accoinpanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to providing a removable hinding foribooks, and is particularly applicable to diaries and other books which are tiled or preserved for reference after having been written full, and in which cases one cover may be used for a series of hooks.
Figure l is an end view of my entire invention. Fig. 2 shows the book A and'cover O detached. Figp is the elastic clamp D, having the sloping or diverging corners d d.
A is an ordinary blank book otany desired shape, with its leaves sewed or fastened together in any mode. at one edge. C is the cover, consisting of the lids e ejoined by the backf. In the back f is placed the elastic clamp D, which latter is nearly or quite as .long as the width ot` the book to be bound.
The clamp D is provided with the divergent die corners d d, to which shape the back fis coni formed. By reason of the slope or divergence of the corners d d it is made practicable to pass between such corners into thelamp, and thus into the back f, the one end or side of a blank-book of almost any thickness, and the back j' from the elasticity imparted fto it by the clamp'D tightens upon and rigidly clasps the book. As before suggested, the back f will readily adapt itself' to nearly any thickness of book; and should it be found desirable to use unusually thick books for any purpose, the diameter of/the clamp D can be correspondingly increased. No special preparation of the book is necessary, as the elasticity of the clamp is sufficient to compel the cover to retain its place. i
What I claim as myl invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The clamp D, provided with the divergent corners d cl, in combination with the back f, cover C, and book. A, all substantially as and for the purpose described. y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aftix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM E. EASTMAN.
