Description

H. HUSS. Book Displaying Rack.
No. 197,136. Patented Nov. 13,1877.
Fi i 2. I
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY HUSS, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-DISPLAYING RACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,136, dated November 13, 1877; application filed October 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HUss, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Book-Racks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a front View, in perspective. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in attaching ledges orprojections to a board orbase-plate,'onwhich ledges the under side of the book is to rest. A certain distance above each ledge is a wire arm or bail, which is hinged to the board or base-plate to which the ledges are attached, and which is designed to pass across the book near its top edge, thus giving the book an inclined position on the rack, and allowing the title of the book to be readily seen. By this arrangement the books are also placed one above the other, so as to expose the title of each book.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the board or base-plate to which the ledges b b b are attached, on which ledges rest the lower edges of the books, as shown in the drawing. The swinging arms or bails c c c are hinged to the board or base-plate A, each of the arms being attached a certain distance above their corresponding ledges b b I). These swinging arms or bails c c a pass across the faces of the books near their. top edges, by which means the books are securely held, at the same time that they assume an inclined position, which allows their titles to be plainly exposed to view.
By this arrangement, also, the books are placed one above the other, so that the title of each book can be seen, and the title is not concealed by the book adjacent to it. The arms or bails c c c are hinged to the board or base-plate A, so that they can be swung out of the way, by which arrangement the book can be easily taken from the rack, and as readily replaced.
It is evident that the ledges b b b, instead of being attached to the board or baseplate A, may be of one piece with it, or that the ledges b b b, together with the base-plate A, can be made of metal, or any desirable substance, and cast or pressed in a die, without altering the nature of my invention; also, the swinging arms 0 0 0 can be made of cord or any flexible material, and arranged so that they can be shortened or lengthened, thus giving the book any desired inclination.
' Instead of books, pamphlets, bill-heads, and other papers of a similar nature can be placed in the rack.
' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In abook-rack, the combination, with a suitaable base-plate, A, of a series of supportingledges, b b b, and swinging retaining-bails c c 0, so that books or other papers of various sizes can be placed on the rack one above the other, leaving a part of the faces of the books, together with their titles, exposed. to view, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 24th day of October, 1877.
