Description

. REED.
Temporary Binders. Y
N014@ 790, PafentedApri|14,1a74.
fmfeaan UNITED STATES PATENT EErc.:
WILLIAM REID, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARY BINDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 149,790, dated April 14, 1874; application tiled February 2, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM REID, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Temporary Binder; and that the following is a full, clear,
'and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this speciiication.
This invention has for its object the construction of files for pamphlets and papers; and the invention consists in a pamphlet and paper le with an adjustable automatic back, combined with tie-rods, stitchii'ig-cords, and needles, constructed and arranged in the manner hereinafter fully described.
By my invention a ready file or binder is produced that will enable the user to readily tile his pamphlets and papers, so that they can be easily referred to, and at the same time be in such a c ompact state as to possess all the advantages of a regularly-bound book.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of my file or binder open; Fig. 2, an edge view of same; and Fig. 3, an end view, showing the file or binder closed.
Similar letters ofrefcrence indicate like parts in the several figures.
A represents the sides of my file or binder.
`'Ihese sides maybe constructed of the ordinary binders board, and covered with cloth, leather, or any suitable material. "Ilo one of the sides A is affixed a flexible back, a, and to the other of said sides is afxed a wire or rod, B, and also a rod or wire, O. The wire B has formed in it two eyes, c c. To the irstmentioned side A is secured a rod, or wire, e. 'lhis last-mentioned rod is bound and covered onto the side so as not to be visible. The rods B and C are so aflixed as to be visible on the inner side of the side A. Onto the rod C are secured three elastic straps, f f f. The lower ends of the upper and lower ones of these straps are secured to the inner edge of thc flexible back a by passing around a wire fastened to the edge of said back. The center one of said straps f has affixed to it a catch or hook, g.
My le or binder being constructed subst-antially as above described, it is operated or used in the following manner Stitching-cords h, one end of each being secured to the wire e, and their other ends'-beingthreaded through needles t' c', (or they may be formed into loops and be attached to the wire e and the needles z' i, as shown in Fig. 1,) are passed through the back of pamphlets or papers D, and through the holes or eyes c c in the wire B, and thence to the fastener or hook g, where they are held in position, confining the pamphlet or paper snugly against the Wire B and securely within the sides A. As the number of pamphlets or papers filed or bound increases, the elastic straps f f permit the flexible back a to be drawn out from the inner side of the boards A, so that this back readily accommodates its width to the number of pamphlets filed within the sides, the upper and lower elastics f j' keeping the back always in position, and the central elastic j' adjusting or rendering adjust able the stitching-cords h h.
I am aware that temporary binders have been made with extension-backs 5 and I do not claim this broadly 3 but Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A temporary binder provided with boards A and flexible extension-back a, rendered automatically adjustable by elastic straps j', arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
Witnesses: Y'VILLIAM' REID.
