IIEPROVEMENT IN DEVICE EOR.. PU'LLING- SQP-POLES.
Thosohedule referred to in these Letten Patent and maldng part ofthe-same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1,0. BJEIALE, of-Malone, in thecounty `of Franklin, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device for Pulling Hop-Poles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the Vart to make and use the same, reference being had to' the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved device for the purpose of pulling hop-poles, and has for its ob- Y ject simplicity and economy in construct-ion, together ,Li-with facility in the manipulation of thedevice, and the Twithdrawing ofthe poles, without the necessity of shaking the same, and causing the hops to drop from the vines.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention applied to a person as when, in use. p
The device is constructed on the principle of a tongs, A A being two bars, or shanks, which cross each other, and are connected by a pivot-belga, at one side of the centre of their length, so vthat the bolt a will be near the jaws B B, the latter being formed by bending A A, at one end, at right angles with the main portions, and corrugating the inner edges of the bent parts, or jaws B, to form teeth, b, as shown clearly in the drawing.
The bending of the bars, or Shanks, to form the jaws B B, gives the tongs a .considerable leverage-power.
The handles O O of the tongs are formed by forging or drawing ont the upper ends of the bars, or shanks, and bending them over, in loop-shape, at right angles with A A, as plainly shown in the drawing.
Each handle C of the device has a strap, D, attached to it, and these straps extend over the shoulders of the operator, and may be lengthened or shortened, by means of buckles, c, so that the device may be suspended, to suit the height of the operator.
If necessary or desired, a cross-strap, (shown in dotted 1ines,) may be attached to the shoulder-straps D D, to keep them in their proper place.
By this simple device, the hop-poles may be drawn or pulled out of the ground, without shaking them, and causing the hops to drop from the vines.
The shoulder-'straps D D, it will be seen, enable the operator to apply the lmuscles of thelegs, and other parts of the body, as well as those of the arms, to the prosecuting of the work.
Having thus described my invention,
Iv claim as new, and desire toV secure by Letters Patent- A device for pulling hop-poles, constructed and operated in the manner substantially as'herein shown and described.
O. B. HALE.
