IMPROVEMENT IN ICE-TONGS.

specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,609, dated February 20, 1877; application filed J anuaryv 31, 1877;

To alt lwhom it may concern:

Beit known that I, PETER EULER,of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Tongs; and l do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled inthe art to "which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speoication.

'l'he nature of my invention'consists in the construction and arrangement of a pair of icetongs, or tongs for grappling and hoisting` or lifting any desired articles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The annexed drawing, which fully illustrates lny invention, represents a side view ot' the same. l l

A A represent two bowed or curved arms, pivoted together at a, and provided at their lower ends with jaws Aor prongs B B, of any suitable form or shape, to grasp or grapple the article intended.

Above the pivot a the arms A A form handles or levers O C, 'crossing each other, as

pivoted two links, D D, the upperendsof which are pivoted together to a shank, b, projecting downward from the handle G, the parts together forming a toggle-joint for operating the arms'ot' the tongs.

rEhe handle-shank b passes through a'guide or projection, d, attached to or formed on a bar or strap, I, which ispivoted to the tongs by the pivot a. From this guide or projection extends a knob or handle, J, as shown.

These tongs are operated by holding them with the handle Gr and striking them down upon the block ot' ice, when the togglejoint spreads so as to open the arms and allow the jaws B to take hold ot' the ice. Then, by raising the tongs the ice is lifted .by them, and the heavier the ice is the closer the tongs 'hold it.

By taking hold ofthe knob or handle J with the left hand, While the right hand has hold of the handle G, the arms A A can be opened easily and guided so that the jaws B can take proper hold of the ice.

These tongs may'` be used for hoistingI or lifting other articles as Well as ice, the jaws or prongs B being, however, properly shaped to suit the purpose for which the tongs may be intended.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
