Description
' UNIT D STATES PATENT FFIC EG S. M. STEWART, OF NEW HARRISBURG, OHIO.
" IMPROVEMENT IN PLows.
Specification forming paitof Letters Patent No. 112,508, dated March 7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. M. STEWART, of New Harrisburg, in the county of Carroll, and in l the State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements inIlows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing an improvement in fastening the beam and handle of plows in such a manner that they can be adjusted at will.
To enable others skilled in the artto make and use'my invention, I will proceed to de scribe its construction and operation.
In Figure 1, A is thelandside; B,the beam, which is securely fastened to the connectingpiece 0, with its twoarms, c and c". To a wrist, n, of the former the handle D is attached. A short distance from the wrist the arm a has a curved slot, E, in which works a pin, 0, fastened to the handleand provided with a nut. The connecting-piece is attached to the wrist p of the landside in such a manner as to allow not only avibrating but also a short lateral movement to 'it. The arm 0 is attached to the shoulder f of the slide F by the bolt q. To allowthe lateral movement of the connectin g-piece, the shoulder has a curved slot, G, Fig. 2. The slide has also a curved slot, II, and by its means can be slid up and down over the wrist r of the landside. This wrist is provided with a nut which, when tightened, holds the slide securely to thelandside.
Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the slide and connecting-piece.
Its operation is as follows: When it is desired to plow deep, the nut which holds the slide to the landside is loosened, and the slide pushed down far enough to raise the end of the beam to the proper height. By the same operation the handle is lowered, but on loosening the nut of its pin it is free to be raised to suit. The nuts are then again tightened.
By reversing the operation the beam and handle can be adjusted for shallow plowing. Thebeam can also be shifted laterally and set at an angle to the plow by means of the lower arm of the connecting-piece and the curved slot in the shoulder of the slide. Ad justed in this manner, the plow is madeto take more land.
' What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The connecting-piece O, in combination with the slide F, substantially as and for the pur= pose set forth.
The above specification signed by me this 20th day of March, 1869.
s. M. STEWART.
