Description

PATENTED OUT. 29. 1907.
H. R0$ENBAUM. PORTABLE WORK BENCH.
APPLIOATION FILED DEG.2 7, 1905.
m: NORRIS PETERS c HARRY ROSENBA'UM, OF NEW YORK, N.
PORTABLE WORK-BENOH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29, 1907.
Application filed December 2'7. 1905- Serial No. 293,535.
To all whom. ib'may concern:
Be it known that I, IIARRY Rosnnniirn, a subject ot' Hungary, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and uscl'ul Portable \\'ork- Bench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to work-benches, and is designed and constructed with supports so arranged that one of the supports can he l'olded against the inncr sides of the other support.
Heretofore when plumbers, machinists, sltam-[ittta's and others employed in constructing new buildings, or when sent away i'rom the shop on repair work, it was necessary in many cases to construct a work-lunch on which to mount a vise to hold the pipe or other work to be altered. in many cases it was necessary to construct a work-bench on each floor of the building: in order to avoid the great loss of time. caused by having to carry the work to and from the \vork-btm-h.
. One of the objects 01' my invention is to construct a. portable work-bench which is strong and rigid and capable of sustaining Weights and strains.
The work-bench is light and can be carricd by any person oi ordinary strength from place to place where the Work is located, thereby avoiding grcat loss of time.
The top of the Work-bench is so constructed. that a machinists or plunihcrs visecan bc readily at tached or detached.
Other objects will hereinafter appear.
in the drawings forming part ol' this specification, l igure 1 is a perspective. view, showinga work-bench constructed in accordance with my invention, also showing in dotted outline a plumbcrs viso mounted on the top of the work-bench. Fiy' 2 is a. front elevation. Fig 3 is a side view in elevation.
in the several views like signs (lcnolo like parts.
Referring to the drawing, .l rcprascnis th front has formed ot' one piece and are rigidly braced together by means of the brace l. The legs I are provided with feet 2, having apertures said l'eet extend outwardly from the sides of the legs l and are adapl d to 11 st upon the floor thereby supporting the legs .1 in a rig-id posi tion. The top oi the work-bench consists oi bars -'l and 5, one end ol' each of the bars -'l and 5 is rigidly secured to the under side of the crossbar (i ot the Ices l. The other ends of the bars 4 and 5 have hinge portions 7 and 8 formed thereon, and are adapted to receive the hinge-bar or pintle 5). On the lop ot' the bars 4 and 5 is secured a flat bar or plate l0, which holds the bars 4 and 5 ri -idly together in position, and it forms in conjunction with the bars i and 5, and crossbar 6 the top of the work-bench. letween the bars t and 5 and the bar or plate 10 and cross-bar 6 are longitudinal spaces ll and 12, adapted to receive. the base of a vise or other tool. The hinge portions '7 and 8 ol the liars l and 5 are hinged to the rear legs 13 and 1 t. The rear he's Ill and 14 are longer than the front legs l, and are provided with lect l7 and 18 having aperturts l7 and IS, the said l'cct brine; adapted to rest upon thc lloor. \Yhcn the work-bench is in an operative position, the tool 17 and 18 are resting upon the lloor, and the rear lce's arc in an angular position with rtspt ct to the front ltgs l. The hinge portions olthe bars -i and 5, and the hinge portions ol the rear legs l3 and 1- are hinged on the hinge-bar or pintlo 9. The rtar ltgs I? and 1-1 are braced b means of the bar or plate IE), which is adapted to slrcnn'thcn the rcar legs it} and H. (hi the rcar side ol' the rear ltg's l3 and ti are secured hook l'ormcd tool-rcsis 20 and 2|, adapted to hold wrcnchcs and other tools of the workman. Sc-
('lltitl to the side ot the front it as l i an oil-can support 22, which is uscd to hold the oil-can when not in use.
in operation when the work-hcm-h is not in use, the rear lcgs l3 and H can be swung, to the. position as shown in Fig.3. 2;. and the work-bench can thcn be placed on thc iioor or against the wall out ot the way. When in an operative position, the rear ltgs l3 and H are swung out l'rom the trout ltg's l until the feet l7 and IS oi the rim legs 13% and H rt-st lirmly on the floor.
It is obvious that a \vork-lwnch constructed in accordance with my invt nlion is a very uscl'ul and economical work-bench it is simple in construction, and at the satire time is embodied with all the features to makc it a strong, rigid and serviceable \vorkbench.
,llavin tints dt-sclibcd my invent ion, 1 claim:
I. In a portable work-bcneh the combination oltwo pairs o1 legs one pair or which is longer than the other, braces secured to said logs. the longitudinal bars 4 and 5' having; hinge portions T and S and to which one pair 01f said legs are hinged. the other pair of said legs being rigidl secured to the other ends of said bars. one pair of said legs being adapted to be folded against the inner sides ol the other pair of legs.
2. A portable work-bench comprising two pairs or divergin': legs, braces rigidlv secured to said legs. of a bench-lop one end or which is rigidly secured to one pair ol' said legsv the other end having hinge portions formed thereon adapted to engage with hinge portions formed on the other pair of legs. a hinge-bar connecting said hinge portions thereby forming a l'oldahle support for said top.
11. i\ \vork-bcm'h comprising a l'oldable support and a stationary support. of a bench top formed ol parallel bars two or said liars having: hinge portions adapted to engage with hinge portions l'ormcd on the l'olduble support, the other ends oi said bars being lixed lo the stationary sup port. and a hinge'bar connectin: said hinge portions.
