Description

Dec. 9, 1930. CQYOUNG 1,784,264
PIPE VISE STAND Filed June 13, 1928 lN VEN TOR Patented Dec. 9, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFIOE LEE 0'. YOUNG, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO WESTERN WIRE- PRODUCTS (30., OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI PIPE-VISE STAND Application filed June 13, 1928. Serial No. 284,898;
This invention relates generally to plumbers tools and devices. More particularly, my present invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in plumbers equipment of the type commonly known as pipe-vise stands and has for its primary object the provision of an inexpensive, compact, durable, and efficient collapsible vise-stand that may with equal facility be collapsed for convenient portability or set up for use, and when in use is firm and rigid, the present application being a continuation in part of my copending application Serial No. 58,098, now issued as Patent No. 1,695,311, dated December 18, 1928.
And with the above and other objects in view, my present invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collapsible pipe-vise stand embodying my invention, illustrated as when set-up for use;
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the stand as when set-up for use;
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the stand as when collapsed for portability;
Figure 4: is an enlarged fragmental detail view, showing the rule-joint connect-ion between the several respective legs and the head of the stand; and
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken approximately on the line 55, Figure 2.
Referring now more in detail and by reference characters to the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 designates the topmember or head of the stand, which is preferably in the form of a plate-casting formed or provided with variously located and suitably spaced openings or the like, as at 2, for accommodating convenient attachment to the plate 1 of the particular vise or other tool, while fixed upon the upper face of plate 1 is a V-shape lug 3 for supporting a pipe-section in threading opera tions and an arcuate lug a for facilitating pipe-bending operations.
Integrally or otherwise fixed to, and depending from the under face of, plate or head 1, is a plurality of suitably located pairs of spaced parallel ears 5, and having their respective upper ends disposed between, and
' set-up for use.
At its upper or attached end, each leg 7 is of arcuate contour, as best seen in Figure l, whereby each leg 7 is adapted, when in collapsed position, for engagement at a corner, as at 7a, with the under face of the head 1. The leg-corner 7a in its engagement with the head 1 thus forms what may be described as a rule joint, limiting the inwardly swingable movement of the leg to collapsed position. Thereby, the several legs 7 when collapsed, are held out of engagement the one with the other, obviating any squeezing or other injury to the person while carrying the stand.
To limit the outward swingable movement of the several legs 7, the plate 1 is integrally or otherwise rigidly formed upon its under face and adjacent its margin with a plurality of depending arcuate brackets or arms 8, each bifurcated or forked, as at 9, at its lower or free end and each suitably disposed with its forked end 9 presented inwardly for individual engagement with a respective leg 7. Thus, when the several legs 7 are spread outwardly and individually engaged by the several bracket-arms 8, not only are the several legs 7 retained by the brackets 8 from furtier outward swingable movement, but the several arms or brackets 8 function also in co-operation with the several legs 7 as reinforcing braces for the head, particularly at its margin, and thus a firm, rigid stand for the head 1 and its carried vise, not shown, is provided, each leg 7 being relatively retained in outwardlyswung position and in engagement with its respective brace-providing arm 8, by means of a preferably double hook 10 spanning and pivoted at its shank upon the leg, as at 11, and adapted at its free end for detachable engagement with oppositely disposed lugs 12 co-operatively located on the arm 8, as best seen in Figure 2. Preferably each of said legs 7 is provided at its lower or free end with a projecting prong 13 for detachable gripping -or non-slipping engagement with a fioor or other supportand 4 also with a foot 14 for convenient bolting, if
-desired,-tothe floor. Y I am aware that-changes in the 'form,-construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of my new pipe-vise stand may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described Without departing from :the nature and ;princip1e of myrinventionr V 7 Having thus described my invention, what ,Lclaim and-desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
.A pipe-vise stand including a head in the form of ajplate, .a supportingdeg pivotally .attached-atnn-end to the head for swingable movement, and :an arcuate bracket-arm de- 35 zpending from the headand having a bifurcated free end presented inwardly relatively to-and disposed under the head for engagement by and with the leg for re-inforcingly :bracin'g -the head, :in combination with means icomprising outwardly presented opposed lugs upon the arm, and a double rhook spanning-and :pivoted at its shank upon the :leg for: detachable engagement with the lugs for \releasably retaining the leg obliquely in en- ,gagement withthe arm.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
