ELIJ AH ABERHAM CARMAN, OF GEORGETOWN, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I-IALF TO MILO W. BAUGHMAN, OF GEORGETOWN, ILLINOIS.
PAI NTERS OR DECO RATORS SCAFFO LD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 711,384, dated October 14, 1902.
' Application filed April 11, 1902. Serial No. 102,448. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH ABERHAM OAR- MAN, a citizen of the United States. residing at Georgetown, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Painters and Decorators Scafiold, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ladders and scaffolds employed by painters, decorators, and other workmen, and has for its object the production of a combined ladder and scaffold which will be rigid and secure when erected and which may be readily adjusted to suit the room or other locality where it is to be employed and which may be readily and quickly erected or dismembered when required.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings illustrative of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device complete. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional detail of one of the brackets and its attachments.
The device comprises two spaced ladders, (indicated at 10,) each with an adjustable bracket disposed thereon and adapted to support the ends of a standing board or platform. The ladders are of the usual construction, with side members and rounds, as shown, and as both ladders and both brackets are precisely alike like reference characters are employed to denote corresponding parts in each. The brackets are formed with main side members 11 12, spaced apart and connected by intermediately transverse spaced rounds 13 14 and with hooks 15 16 on their upper ends, engaging one of the rounds of the ladder, as shown. Projecting from each of the side members 11 12 are curved brace members 17 18, united to the side members at their ends and connected transversely by spaced rounds 1920 in horizontal alinement with the rounds 13 14, as shown. The two sets of rounds 13 14 and 19 2O afford supports for the ends of the standing board or platform, as shown, the latter consisting of two sections 21 22, overlapping at their inner ends and coupled by inclosing straps 23 24, so that the two sections may be adjusted longitudinally to vary the distance between the oppositely-disposed ladders and brackets, and consequently thereby vary the length of the scaffold. Upon the under sides of the sections 21 22 between the rounds 14 20 are checks or blocks 25, secured removably in position by bolts 26 to prevent any horizontal movement of the platform in the brackets.
The lower ends of the side members 11 12 are provided with feet 27 28, having hooks 29 30, engaging one of the rounds of the ladder and vertically adjustable by means of slots 31 and bolts 32, so that the bracket may be readily adaptable to variations in the distances between the rounds of the ladders, so as to adapt the brackets to difierent forms or sizes of ladders.
By this simple construction'a very convenient, easily-adjustable, and firm scafiold is produced, which may be readily erected and adapted to the locality required and movable from place to place.
The device is thus adapted to be employed upon the ordinary ladders used by carpenters and other mechanics, so that the only parts which need to be transported are the brackets and the platform-section 21 22.
The device may be made in various sizes to adapt them to difierent classes of work, and the proportions may be altered or varied and the parts modified in minor particulars Without aifectin g the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, I
' claimder, substantially as described.
2. A bracket for a painters scaifold consisting of spaced side members connected transversely by spaced rounds, brace members extending from said side members and connected transversely by spaced rounds, and
means for connecting said bracket adj ustably to a ladder, substantially as described.
3. A bracket for painters scaffolds consisting of spaced side members connected transversely by spaced rounds, brace members adjustably connected to said side members and transversely united by spaced rounds, and means for removably connecting said bracket to a ladder, substantially as described.
4,. In a painters scaifold, two brackets formed of spaced side members connected transversely by spaced rounds and brace members extending from said side members and united transversely by spaced rounds, in combination with ladders disposed to support said brackets, and a platform engaging said spaced rounds by its opposite ends, substantially as described.
. 5. In a painters scaffold, two brackets formed of spaced side members connected transversely by spaced rounds and brace members extending from said side members and united transversely by spaced rounds, in combination with ladders disposed to support said brackets,a platform engaging said spaced rounds by its opposite ends, and means for detachably connecting said platform to said brackets, substantially as described.
6. In a painters scafiold, two brackets formed of spaced side members connected transversely by spaced rounds and brace members extending from said side members and united transversely by spaced rounds, in combination with ladders disposed to support said brackets,a platform engaging said'spaced rounds by its opposite ends, and means for extending said platform horizontally, substantially as described.
7. A bracket for painters scafiolds, comprising spaced side members connected transversely by supporting-rounds, brace members extending from said side members and con nected transversely by supporting-rounds, and means for removably connecting said bracket to a ladder, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ELIJAH ABERHAM CARMAN.
