Description

@atent JOHN H.
NALE, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, A-SSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOHN O. SLOAN, O F SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 86,241, dated January 26, 1869.
IMPROVED WAGON-SEAT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I, JOHN H. NALE, of Decatur, county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Wagon-Seat; an I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
A represents a common wagon-seat.
B is a stout beam of hard wood, fastened crosswise to the bottom of the seat A, and equidistant from either end.
G O are strips of hardwood, which may be of any number, joined together near their ends by the crossties D D, and the other ends of which are inserted firmlyin morti-ses formed in the sides of the beam B.
Underneath the strips 0 O, and a short distance from either side of the beam B, are the wedge-shaped slats E E, through which the strips 0 O are bolted and fastened to the bottom of the seat, thus forming a leverage; and the combination of the strips 0 U and ties D D with the mortised beam B and Wedge-shaped slats E E, forms a spring which gives an easy, elastic motion to the seat. v
The ends of the strips 0 C also project beyond the cross-ties D D snfiiiciently far to enable the seat to rest by them upon the sides of the wagon-bed.
We do not claim any patent for spring wagon-seat heretofore granted, or any specific part thereof; but
We claim the combination and arrangement of the spring-strips O O, secured to the beam B by means of mortises, and to the wedge-shaped planks or leversupports E E by means of screws, the outer ends of these strips 0 O perfoi'atin g the connecting-bars D D, and projecting sufficiently to form a support for the seat upon the sides of the wagon-bed, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
, JOHN H. NALE. Witnesses:
