Description

Letters Patent No. 97,135, dated November 23, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOSE STOOLS .AND CLOSETS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom 'it mag/concern Beit known that LCHARLES Tann, of Pecatonica, in the county of Winnebago, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement- -in Privy-Seats and Closets; and I do hereby declare that' the following is a` full and exact description of the same, ret'erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. y
This invention consists. mainly, in the combination of horizontally-slidingcovers, arranged beneath a pierced Seat, with a vertically-moving seat, in such manner that when the seat is depressed by the weight ot' the occupant, the covers are opened, and that when the seat 4is relieved from the weight, the covers instantly close, thus shutting oli the etfluvia that would otherwise arise.
The details of construction and manner of operation will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings- -Figure 1 represents a sectional view, through the line a: x, fig. 2, and
Figure 2 represents a plan view, with the seat removed. v
To enable othersv to make my invention, and understand fully its operation, I will now proceed fully to describe it.
A represents. a box, which may be constructed in any suitable manner.
B represents the seat, which is provided with standards b b, as shown in lig. 1, at each corner. These standards slide' in grooves, so that the seat is enabled to move freely, vertically. v
C represents a band ot' cloth, or other tlexiblle material, by means of which the seat-cover andibox are united, asY shown.
D D represent sliding covers, which move horizontally` in grooves d.
From the top of each rises the arm d1, from which projects the rod d?, as shown.
This rod passes through the side of thc box, and upon it, between the arm ll and the box, is located the spring.,r E.
F F represent bands, vot` any suitable material, one end ot each of which is attached to the inner ends of the sliding covers D, and the other, after passing over the pulley f, is attached to the cross-'bars of the standards b, as shown in fig. 1.
The operation of my invention will be easily understood. y
As the seat is depressed bythe weight of tl'ie occnpant, the covers D D are instantly slid back, in consequence of the action of the standards b (which are depressed with the seat) upon the bands F.
As soon, however, as the weight is removed from the seat, the covers D are instantly closed bythe action of the springs E.
As all the joints are covered with felt, there is no 'opportunity for the escape of etiiuvia.
The principle embodied in the above invention may be variously modified. The specitic form shown need not necessarily be adhered to. It is especially applicable for stools for sick rooms and hospitals.
Having thus fully described my invention,
NVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let.- ters Patent, is-
1. The combination of horizontally-slidng covers.
with a vertically-moving seat, substantially as dcscribed, for the purpose set forth.
2. The closet described, consisting ot' the box, seat, flexible band, sliding covers, springs, pulleys, standards, and bands, when combined and arranged as described, for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed, this 4th day of Qctober, 1860.
CHARLES TRUE.
