Specification of Letters Patent.

Soldier, in the county of Jackson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Door or Gate Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to locks or fasteners for doors or gates; and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a strong, simple, and reliable fastening device which can be easily secured to the door or gate and which will securely latch or look the door or gate.

Another object is to provide a device of this character which can be quickly adjusted to doors or gates of different thicknesses.

These and other objects are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fastening device made in accordance with my in vention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section thereof. Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the same. F ig. 5 is a perspective view of a locking-bar. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the keeper for the latch or look, and Fig. 7 is a similar view of the key for the lock.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the shank of the fastener preferably of cylindrical form and adapted to extend through a round opening in the door. Fastened to one end of the shank is a turn-button or handle 2, provided with a lug 3. A collar 4 is provided with a segmental groove 5, in which the lug 3 is fitted. The groove 5 extends about onefourth of the circle surrounding the shank of the lock in order to limit the movement of the shank by means of the handle to onefourth of a turn.

Secured to the opposite end of the shank from the handle 2 is a locking-bolt 6, com prising a tubular portion to fit the shank and right-angularly-arranged bolts 7 and 8. This device is secured to the tank of the lock by means of a set-screw 9. The shank preferably has a longitudinal recess 1 extending through the handle 2 and terminating near its other end.

Within the recess 1 of the shank is alocking-bolt 10, provided with a lug 11, the inner end of said bolt being seated against a spring 12 in the bottom of the recess 1 in the shank. The collar 4 is provided with two recesses or slots 13 and 14, into one of which the lug 11 is forced by a spring 12 and the bolt held in a locked position. A key is adapted to be inserted through the aperture in the handle and to engage the upper end of the locking' bar 10 to push said bar down out of the re cess 13 or 14, with which it is engaged, so that the lug 11 will pass out of the recess 18 or 14 in the collar to unlock the device and permit the handle to be turned. A keeper 16 is secured to the doorframe,and when one of the members 7 or 8 is swung into the opening in the keeper 16 the other member is in a position to be operated from the inside of the door. From the outside of the door the handle 1 is operated.

The lug 3 is moved in the groove in the-collar and stopped at the ends, so that the members 7 and 8 can only move a certain distance to lock or unlock the same. The lock-bar 10 may be removed from the device and the fastener used as a latch without locking means. The two members 7 and S are so disposed relatively that when one is engaged with the keeper- 16 the same serves as a weight or balance to hold the parts in locked condition until the other member is operated for the purpose of disengaging it from the keeper 16; also, when the member 7 or 8 is used to swing the latch the weight serves to hold the parts in the position to which they are swung.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A fastener for doors or gates comprising a shank, a handle secured to said shank and provided with a lug, a collar having a segmental groove to accommodate the lug, a locking device secured to said shank and pro vided with right-angularlyextending bolts adapted to engage a keeper, substantially as described.

2. A fastening device comprising a shank, a handle provided with a lug, a collar provided With a groove and recesses, a lock-bar mounted upon a spring Within the shank and having means for engaging said recesses, a locking device secured to the shank by a setscrew and provided With angularly-extending bolts and a key adapted to be inserted to engage the end of the lock-bar and to disengage said bar from the collar, substantially. as described.
