NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD SOHINDLER, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
$ASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 686,345, dated November 12, 1901.
Application filed May 7, 1900. Serial No. 15,700. on model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD SCHINDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification.
This invention relates to sash-fastenersg and it has for its object to provide a simple and efficient construction in which the bolt of the fastener may be locked and unlocked by means of a suitable key.
To this end the invention, as generally stated, comprises a plate or support, a bolt thereon, and an independently-movable keycontrolled locking and unlocking device for said bolt.
It also comprises certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window having my improved fastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section as on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, the key beingincluded. Fig. 3 is a vertical section as on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device detached. Fig. 5 is a front view thereof.
A A represent the upper and lower sashes, respectively, of a window, and B represents my improved fastener applied thereto. The upper rail of the lower sash is horizontally slotted or mortised to receive the bolt and adjuncts of the fastener, while the meetingrail of the upper sash is provided with a slotted keeper 1?, with which the bolt is adapted to coact. This bolt comprises the longer arm I? of a bell-crank lever fulcrumed between inwardly-extending lugs b on a plate 6 which is secured by screws 19 or other means to the inner side of the sash-rail. The plate sash; The end of the arm I) is provided with a suitably-located notch b", into and from which the free end of a dog or latch b on the inner face of the plate may be moved when the bolt is engaged with the keeper. The pivot-pin b of the dog extends outwardly through the plate and is triangular, square, or other appropriate shape in cross-section for engagement by a suitable key 0, whereby the dog may be swung up or down to disengage it from or engage it with the notch in the lever, as desired. This extension of the pivotpin is laterally incased by a barrel or guard b formed on the outer side of the base, so that the dog cannot be manipulated'without the use of an appropriate key that may be inserted in the barrel and engaged with the pivot-pin.
It will be obvious that the body of the fastenor may be applied to the side of one of the sashes and theadjoining side piece of the other sash be provided with asuitably-located keeper for engagement by the bolt of the fastener.
My invention is not restricted to the particular details of construction herein shown and described, as the same maybe variously modified without departing from the fair spirit of the invention.
said bell-crank lever, the pivot-pin on the said dog being extended within said barrel and adapted to be engaged by a suitable key for operating the dog.
2. A sash provided with a recess in one of the rails thereof, a plate having an outwardly extended barrel, a bell-crank or angular 1ever pivoted on said plate within said recess of the sash-rail, one arm of said lever being extended through the plate and provided with a handle or knob, a pivoted locking-dog on fixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD SCHINDLER.
