Description

G. L. AULT. SAFE "1.001;.
(Nb Model.)
No. 532,747, Patented Jan. 22, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE LINCOLN AULT, or ROLLA,.NORTHY DAKOTA.
SAFE-LOCK;
sPEoIFIcATIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,747, dated January 22, 1895.
' Application filed May 1, 1894. semi No. 509,627. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE LINCOLN AULT, a cltizen of the United States, residing at Rolla, 1n the county of Rolette and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Safes and Vaults; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the nvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to looks which are more especially adapted for safes and vaults, and consists in certain improvements in the construction of such looks, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 represents a view of the inner side of a door havingmyimprovements. Fig.2isa'topview of the door when closed. Fig. 3 is a like View of the same when open.
A door, having my improved lock, is made in two parts, designated A, A, connected by a pivotal bolt B, the hinge being at the center as shown. On the inner side of the door and in the parts, a, a, which lap one on another and form the hinge joint, are recesses, b, said recesses being in line when the door is closed, as seen in Fig. 1, but not in line when the door is open as in Fig. 3. 0 indicates a series of locking bolts whic fit loosely in said recesses, 19, and have vertical movement therein, said bolts having a somewhat dovetail form in section, so that they cannot be withdrawn laterally from the recesses. a
0 indicates a flat, vertical bar or plate which is placed against the inner side of the door, along the hinge joint, said plate being formed or provided with arms or lateral extensions (1. Each of the bolts 0, is loosely connected with one of the arms d, of plate O,by a pin or stud e, extending from bolt 0, through an aperture in the arm 01, so that by a vertical movement of plate 0, the said bolts maybe raised or depressed.
D indicates a spindle or bolt which is passed through the door and has on its inward end a knob from which an arm 9, extends at a right angle and has a loose connection at t, with the vertical plate 0, so that by turning the bolt, D, by means of a knob h, on the outer end of said bolt, the plate, G, may be raised or depressed and impart like movements to the locking bolts 0.
In Fig. 1, the bolts 0 are shown in their raised position, their position when depressed being indicated in dotted lines, and when said bolts arein the depressed position, the door is looked, as each bolt 0, extends from a groove or recess 19, in a part a of the hinge joint, into a groove in an adjoining part at, making the hinge joint a rigid connection and preventing the opening of the door. A person may then unlock the door by turning the bolt D, which through the arm g, raises the plate 0, and with it the bolts 0, when the door may be opened by pushing the two parts ApA', inward, as the door is constructed to open inward.
With the construction described, if a hole were drilled in the safe, and the plate 0, or either of the bolts 0, were displaced, it would not affect the remaining bolts 0; and if the knob 71. should be broken 0% and the bolt D, driven in, it would not affect the locking bolts, though it might remove the plate 0 from the studs e on said bolts.
Any form of combination or time lock may be used in connection with the bolt or spindle D.
It will be noted that the door being formed in two parts jointed together so that they open inwardly toward each other to a greater or less extent, the access to the interior of the safe is easy and convenient.
I claim- 1. The combination with a door, made in two parts, of a hinge connecting said parts, grooves or recesses formed in and along the hinge joint, a series of bolts placed in said grooves and having vertical movement theretensions which have loose. connections with said bolts, and mechanism for raising and lowering said vertical plate whereby said bolts may be raised or depressed, substantially as and for the purposes described.
in, a vertical plate provided with lateral ex- 2. The combination, with a door having a so as to lock or unlock the door, substantially central hinge, of a series of vertical bolts placed in grooves in the hinge joint, a vertical plate having loose connections with said bolts, a bolt or spindle passed through the door and provided with an arm having a loose connection with said vertical plate, whereby said plate and said bolts may be depressed or raised as set forth and described. IO
In testimony whereof Ihave affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
