Specification of etters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1905,
Arplieation filed June 13, 1904. Renewed August 2, 1905. Serial No- 272.336.
To 077/ 7071/0717 it Tito/y concern:
Be it known that I, \YILLIAM J. FELION, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anniston, in the county of Calhoun and State of Alahama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in smoking-pipes; and the especial object of the improvements is to provide a pipe which will take the nicotin from the tobacco-smoke in its passage from the bowl to the stem.
A further object is to provide a pipe having the above-named object which can be cheaply made and in which the parts are all accessible for cleaning purposes and can be taken apart and readily renewed in wholeor in part.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, Figure 1 represents a vertical section taken through a pipe made in accordance with my invention and alongitudinal section through the stem attached to said pipe. Fig. 2 is a perspective view ofthe tobacco-holding bowl of my improved pipe, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cap or crime for the bottom of the pipe bowl or s 10 Referring to the drawings in detail, (6 rep' resents the outer shell of my improved pipe, which is cylindrical in form, is open at the top and bottom, and is threaded on its inner wall near the bottom to receive the cap 0, provided wit-h external threads 0 which are adapted to engage the corresponding female threads in the shell, thus forming a removable closure for the lower end of the shell. Fitting snugly within the shell is a cylindrical bowl 6, which is adapted to hold the tobacco, is formed with an opening 6 through its bottom, and on its external faceis provided on opposite sides with vertical grooves and with an annular groove U, with which the upper ends of the vertical grooves 7/ communicate. The vertical diameter of the bowl bis somewhat less than the corresponding diameter of the shell, so that when the bowl is in positiona space will be left between the bottom of the bowl and the upper side of the cap 0. This space is adapted to be filled with any suitable fibrous absorbent or filtering medium, as (7, which will act as a filter for the smoke and catch the nicotin contained in such smoke. Extending across the bottom of the bowl is a slight recess into which is fitted the upper edge of the vertical rib c, which is formed integrally with the cap and extends across the upper face of the same, as shown in Fig. 3. This vertical rib forms a partition which extends transversely of the chamber in which the filtering medium displaced and is so arranged that it will be opposite the inner end of the stem a ofthe pipe, which is of the usual form and provided with a mouthpiece (1/ The stem is connected with the bowl in any suitable manner and is provided with the usual smoke-passage.
The bowl 7) is fitted into the shell preferably by close frictional contact between the adjacent wallsiof said parts, so that with the exception of the grooves Z) V b there will be no smoke-passage between the outer wall of the bowl and the inner wall of the shell, whereby the smoker in drawing on the stem will draw the smoke down through the opening 6, the filtering medium (Z, up one of the passages 6 around the annular passage Z2 until it reaches the opposite vertical groove 6 from which it will be drawn down to and through the stem of the pipe, and thus reach the smokers mouth.
It will be apparent that in traversing the circuitous passage above indicated and the filtering medium the smoke will be necessarily relieved of the major part of its nicotin before it reaches the smokers mouth. It will also be apparent that if it be desired to clean the portions of the pipe exposed to the smoke it will be necessary only to unscrew the cap 0, remove the filtering medium (Z, push out the bowl Z), wipe out the inner wall of the shell c and the outer wall and grooves of the bowl. The upper face of the cap 0, including its rib c and the stem smoke-passage, may be cleaned in a similar manner.
I do not limit myself to any particular material of which the shell and the bowl may be composed, nor to any particular form or shape of said parts, nor to any special number of vertical or annular grooves, as I maywish to modify the construction in these respects without altering the essential principles or changing the function of my improved plpe.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pipe, a shell, a removable closure for the bottom of the shell, a bowl adapted to be inserted within the shell and to leave a chamber in the lower portion of the shell, said bowl provided with an opening in its bottom communicating with said chamber, and said shell provided with a partition extending across said chamber and secured to the I on one side of said partition, through said removable closure, a stem communicating chamber, and around the outside of said bowl, with the chamber on one side of said partiand communicating With the smoke-passage I 5 tion, and smoke passages connecting said in said stem on the opposite side of said par- 5 chamber with the smoke-passage in said stem. tition.
2. In a pipe, a shell provided with a stem In testimony whereof I aifix my signaturein and with a removable closure, a bowl adapted presence of witnesses. to fit within said shell and to have a chamber TILLIAM J FELTON. t 1n the lower portion or the snell, a partition formed integrally with said closure and extending across said chamber, and smoke-passages extending from the interior of the bowl itnesses:
