Description

R. L. LOPLIN,
PIPE.
APPLICATION FILED PEBJ?, 1913.
1,114,.3'74.L I Patented 0013.2(),19149 Witnesseslnyntor l y o Attorneys ROBERT L. LOFLIN, OF HIGH POINT, NORTH CAROLINA.
'.PIPE.
T0 all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. LOFLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at High Point, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Pipe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a smokers pipe.
An object of the present invention is" to provide a pipe and means secured thereto .whereby the same may be kept in a clean and sanitary condition. e
A further. object is to provide a pipe with a nicotin chamberI therein.
A further object is to provide a smokers pipe with a nicotin chamber communicating therewith by means of crossed channels, and
to provide means whereby the latter may be 'kept in a clean and open condition.
A further object is to provide a pipe with a cotton containing chamber secured thereto said-cotton to be used in connection with the pipe cleaning means.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can .be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing accompanying the specification and forming a part thereof, the preferable form of my invention is illustrated, in which Figure l'is a vertical cross sectional View of my improved form of smokers pipe. F1g. 2 1s a vview 1n elevation thereof. Flg.
3 is a bottom view of the same.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corre-v spondlng parts throughout 'the several` views, the b'ody portion of the pipe is composed of the bowl portion 1 and a stem 2 extending therefrom, into which stem is threadably secured the mouth piece 3. Secured to the bottom portion of the bowl is a cotton containing chamber 4 a suitable aperture 5 being formed in Vthe side wall thereof whereby cotton may be inserted therein or withdrawn therefrom. The bottom portion of the cotton chamber is provided with an abraded surface 6 intended to be used as a match striker.

Application led February 17, 1913. Serial No. 748,966.
lThe stem 2 is considerably enlarged and 1s provided with the' opening or duct`7 eX- tending therethrough in communication with the mouth piece opening 8 and with the bowl 1. Positioned directly below the said duct 7 is a chamber 9 the outer end of which is internally threaded as at 1'0 the outer end of which is provided with a suitable protecting ring 11 the latter being of,
the usual ornamental design. The chamber 9 extends well withunder the bowl opening and lis in communication with the duct 7 by means of the crossed channels or openings 12 by which means the smoke upon passing through the duct 7 will 'enterthe crossed openings 12 and flow partially down therethrough as will also the liquid or semiliquid matter which is present in the duct 7. As will be apparent the chamber 9 is provided for the reception of foreign matter which may collect within the duct 7 and therefore will comprise a purifying chamber for the smoke before the same passes' through the mouth piece 3.
and forming a sealed end therefor is a plug y 13 extending from.. which is a tube 14 the inner extremity of which is closed and pro; vided with an abradedend adapted to entangle and to obtain a purchase upon the cotton which i's located within the chamber 4. The plug 13 is provided with an opening extending centrally therethrough in communication with the tube 14 and into which opening and tube extends a needle 15 with the knob 16 secured to the outerend thereof. The remote end therefrom ofthe needle is provided with an abraded surface whereby the same may engage and entangle the cotton which is disposed within the said cotton containing chamber. The tube 14 with the plug 13 secured thereto and the needle with the knob are for the purpose of maintaining the various ducts and openings to' the insertion within the various openings e throughout the pipe with the result that the said openings are kept in an open and also clean and dry condition. In order to provide means whereby the said cotton may be removed from the end of the cleaning implement Without necessitating that the hands of the user come in contact therewith a suitable clip 17 is fastened upon the lower portion of the stem and the said clip is pro-- vided with the curled portion 18 which are not inclosed upon themselves and Whereby the said cleaning implements may be inserted therein and then moved longitudi-` nally therefrom with the result that the cotton Will be removed from the end of the said cleaning implement. l
From the foregoing it will be apparent that a smokers pipe has been disclosed vwhich may be easily kept in a sanitary and clean condition and which is provided with a cleaning implement secured therein which may be inserted Within the cotton chamber to receive a small vamount of cotton upon. the .ends thereof and the said cotton may be then pushed through the various openings in the pipe with the result that the pipe openings are kept dry as Well as clean and open. Furthermore that a chamber is provided in communication with the duct '7 which is adapted to serve as asuitable drain therefrom and furthermore that any smoke going down and passing there through will be suitably cooled and purified. Having thus fully described the invention, What is claimed is l. The combination with a smokers pipe provided with an auxiliary munication with themain aperture by cross bore in compassages, of threaded plug engaging the open end of said auxiliary bore, a tube con- 4o provided with an abraded end forthe en- 45 gagement of pipe cleaning material, a knob 'having a needle connected thereto and frictionally engaging the side Walls. of and housed by the said tube, the said needle provided with an abraded end, said needle being Withdrawable from the said tube With-l out opening the said 'auxiliary bore. 2. A smokers pipe comprising a body portion provided With an auxiliarybore in comi y municatlon With the main bore by cross passages, a plug engaging and closing the open end of said auxiliary bore, a tube carried by said plug, said plug provided With an open ing extending therethrough and communieating with the interior of said tube, said tube provided with an abraded end for the engagement of pipe cleaning material, a knob having a needle connected thereto frictionally engaging the side Walls of and housed by said tube, the. needle provided with an abraded en'd, said needle being WithdraWable from the said tube without opening the said auxiliary bore.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own,l ,Ihave hereto aiiixed my sig-'70 nature 1n the presence of two Witnesses.
