Spgcication of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 119110.
To all whom fit may concern.'
Beit known that I, JOHN R. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, 'in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Imtion which will enable the above indicated obj ect to be attained, said construction being capable of being cheaply manufactured and also being readlly cleanable.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l represents a sectional view of a straight-stem pipe constructed in accordance with my improvements; Fig. 2, a side elevational view of the mouth-piece and nicotincollector connected therewith, removed from the` stem of thepipe; Fig. 3, a perspective4 View of the nicotin-collector employed according to the construction shownv in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 4, a broken perspective view showing a slight modification of the nicotincollector; Fig. 5, a perspective view showing a modification of the tubular nipple or connecting member employed in connection with the device shown in Fig. 4; and Fig. 6, a perspective view illustrating another modilication of the nicotin-collector.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, A represents a pipe-bowl; B, a stem connected with said bowl; C, a mouth-piece; D, a nicotin-collector; and E, a tubular nipple or connecting member. The stem B, in the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, comprises a shortsection 1 formed integrally with the base ofthe bowl, and a removable section 2 connected with the section 1. The stem is formed with a comparatively large, straight, smooth bore 3 which extends beneath the bottom of the chamber 4 of the bowl. The bowl is shown provided with a removable bottom 5 having perforations 6 therethrough which communicate with the bore3. The mouthpiece C is formed with a comparatively large chamber 7 therein, the mouth-piece and chamber being of circular cross-section. The chamber has leading therefrom a smokepassage 8 which extends through the flattened tip 9 of the mouth-piece. The member E is of cylindrical form, being equipped externally near its central portion with a iange l0. The bore 3 of the stem is enlarged, as indicated at 11, to receive the portion 12 of the tubular nipple E, the parts having slip-joint connection. The nipple E hasfa bore 13 therethrough which is provided at its Outer end with threads 14. The outer end of the nipple is provided externally with threads ,15, and the inner end of the mouth-piece is internally threaded to connect' therewith. rlhe nicotin-collector D preferably comprises a rod 16 equipped with a pluralityof disks 17 having small perforations or smoke-passages 18 therethrough; an extension 19 at the inner end of said rod which projects beneath the chamber 4 of the bowl of the pipe and has its inner end equipped with an imperforate disk 20 whichI conforms to the cross-section of the bore 3, the upper portion of the member 19 being cut away', as" indicated at 21, thereby forming a chamber, or pan, beneath the pipebowl; a shank 22 which extends through the tubular nipple E and has its outer portion threaded as indicated at 23 and connected with the internal thread of the nipple E, said shank 22 having a longitudinal groove 24 cutin its upper surface and affording a smoke-passage; and a saliva-separator, or deector, 25 projecting from the upper portion of the outer end of the shank 22 into the chamber 7 w of the mouth-piece, and having its upper surface provided with a groove 26 which forms a continuation of the groove 24 and affords an outlet for the smoke into the mouth-piece. At the base of the member 25 is a shoulder 27 which abuts against the outer end of the nipple E. The member 25 is curved somewhat lengthwise, so as to conform to the upper wall of the mouthpiece. The device D is preferably formed integrally, as shown.
In the use of the device, the smoke passes through the minute perforations 18 of the disks of the nicotin-collector, and the nicotin is deposited on the collector. Owing to the relation of the mouth-piece to the device 25, it is impossible for saliva to pass through' the smoke-passage 26 and enter the bore 3 of the pipe-stem and thus reach the bowl of the pipe. Any saliva which may enter the mouth-piece through the passage 8 will be held in the chamber 7 beneath the projection 25. When desired, the mouth-piece may be Withdrawn from the stem, thereby withdrawing the nicotin-collector, the disks on the nicotin-collector serving, in this withdrawing action, to scrape the walls of the bore 3. After the withdrawal, the parts are in the condition represented in Fig. 2, and the nicotin-collector may be cleansed. If desired, the mouth-piece may beunscrewed from the nipple E and the nipple may be unscrewed from the shank 22 of the nicotincollector, enabling the passages 24 and 26 to be cleansed. When the nicotin-collector and mouth-piece are joined together in the condition shown in Fig. 2, the nicotin-collector may be Awiped while the device is held through the medium of the mouth-piece, rendering the operativa a cleanly one. The connection between the mouth-piece and nicotin-collector is such as to prevent rotation of the nicotin-collector with relation to the mouthpiece during the operation of wiping the nicotin-collector by circular motion.
In the construction illustrated in Figs. 4
land, D1 represents a modified form of nicotin-collector; and E1 .a modified form of nipple. In this form, the shank of the nicotin-collector has slip-joint connection with the nipple, the threads being dispensed with, and the shank being provided with a lug 28 adapted to enter a notch 29 with which the outer end of the nipple El is provided, thisprovision serving to prevent rotation of the nicotin-collector with relation tothe mouthpiece duringthe operation of wiping the nicotin-collector. rIhe mouth-piece is connected with the nipple El in the same manner 'as illustrated in Fig. 1, the outer end of the nipple El being threaded externally and the adjacent end of the mouth-piece being threaded internally. Y
In the construction illustrated in Fig. 6, D2 represents a modified form of nicotincollector. In this construction, the nicotincollector takes the Aform of a rod 3Q provided in its upper surface with a longitudinal groove 3l in which are located disk-segments 32 provided with smoke perforations 33. At the inner end of the rod is a complete section or disk 34 which correspondsA with .the disk 20 of the construction shown in Figs. l,
` 2 and 3. In the construction shown in Fig.
6, the connection between the nicotin-collector and the mouth-piece is the same as that shown in Fig. l.
Ubviously, the 'operation of the modified constructions shown in Figs. 4 and 6 is similar to that of the construction shown in Figs. I, 2 and 3. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, however, more nicotin would be allowed to pass through the mouth-piece than in the construction shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3. In each construction, provision is made against passage of saliva into the bore of the pipe-stem; and in each construction, provision is made for scraping out or cleansing the bore of the pipe-stem in the operation of withdrawing the mouth-piece and the nicotin-collector connected therewith.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom.-
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
