TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led November 15, 1909.
Patented lllarn 28, 1911. serieu no. 528,043.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN R. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to means for separating nicotin from tobacco-smoke in pipes, and to preventing saliva from entering the pipe-stem and reaching the bowl of the pipe. v
My primary object is to provide an improved construction which will be thoroughly practical to manufacture and ol improved operation. I
The invention is illustrated in its -preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing', in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectional view of a pipe constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a broken perspective View of the mouth-piece employed; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the combination nicotin-collector and saliva-deiiector employed; and Figs. 4 and 5, transverse sectional views taken as indicated at the corresponding line in Fig. 1. A
ln the construction illustrated, A represents a pipe-bowl; B, a stem connected with said bowl; C, a mouth-piece; D, a combined nicotin-collector and saliva-detlector; and E, a tubular nipple, or connecting member.
The stem B, in the construction illustrated, comprises a short section 1 formed integrally with the base of the bowl, and a removable section 2. Obviously, the sections 1 and 2 may be formed integrally with each other if desired. The stem is provided with a straight, smooth bore 3 which extends beneath the chamber t of the bowl and communicates therewith through a passage 5 located near the inner end of the bore.
The mouthpiece C is formed with a comy paratively large chamber 6 therein, the
mouth-piece and chamber being of substantially circular cross-section. The'chamber has leading therefrom a smoke-passage 7 which extends through the flattened tip 8 of the mouth-piece. The mouth-piece has an externally-threaded shank 9 which is provided with an angular (square) perforation 10 which communicates with the chamber 6. The member E is of cylindrical form and has its outer end counter-bored and internally threaded to connect with the reduced threaded portion 9 for the mouth-piece. rlhe outer end of the stem-section 2 is counterbored, and the inner end ot'the nipple E is made ot reduced diameter, as indicated at .11, to be received in said counter-bore, having slip-joint connection therewith.
rlhe device D preferably comprises a rod 12 equipped with a plurality ot disks 18 whose lower halves are imperforate and whose upper halves are provided with smoke-passages 14; an extension 15 at the inner end of said rod which projects beneath the chamber of the bowl and is preterably ot' the same diameter as the disks, said member 15 serving to lill the inner end of the bore 3 and having` its upper portion recessed, or cut away, as indicated at 16, to alford a bottom located beneath the passage 5; a shank 17 having a cylindrical portion 18- received in the bore of the nipple E and an angular portion 19 received in the squared opening 10 of the mouth-piece; and a saliva separator, or deflector, 2O projecting from the upper portion ot' the outer end ot the portion 19 of the shank 17 into the chamber G of the mouth-piece. The portion 1S ot the stem 17 is of circular cross-section and of the same diameter as the disks 13. Said portion 18 ot said stem projects past the inner end of the nipple E and tits snugly within the outer end of the bore fr smokepassage, or groove, 21 extends longitudinally through the upper portion ot' the shank 17 and saliva-deflector 20, the outer end oi said passage lying` adjacent to the upper wall of the mouth-piece. At the base of the squared opening 1() of the mouth-piece is an internal shoulder 22 adapted to abut against the calendar 23 ot the squared portion 19 of the stem of the device D.
It. will be understood from t-he foregoing description that in screwing the nipple and mouth-piece together the stem of the device D will be securedly clamped, or held, and, moreover, rotation of the device D with relation to the mouth-piece will be prevented, by reason of the angular socket of the mouth-piece and the angular portion 19 of the stem which is received therein. W' hen it is desired to cleanse the pipe, the device B may be withdrawn from the stem ot the pipe through the medium of the mouth-piece, and may be held by means of the mouthpiece while the rod 12, disks 13 and extension 15 are cleansed, as by circular wiping action. If desired, the mouth-piece and nipple may be disconnected from each other, to enable the shank-portion to be cleansed. It will be observed that the nipple E is of suitable size to permit itto be sli-pped over the disks 13 and extension 15 in assembling or disconnecting the parts.
In the use of the pipe a substantially straight draw for the smoke through the upper portion of the bore 3, the nipple E and mouth-piece is secured, while the spaces between the imperforate lower portions of the several disks 13 serve as traps for the nicotin and oils of the tobacco which are carried by the smoke and deposited as the smoke passes through the pipe. The improved construction enables an entirely satisfactory draft to be secured, without interfering with the desired object of separating the nicotin and oils of the tobacco. Any saliva which may enter the mouth-piece will be trapped and cannot reach the bore of the stem and the bowl of the pipe. The smoke is cooled in passing through the de vice D, which is of metal.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only. Hence, no undue limitation is to be understood therefrom, but the claims are to be considered as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.
lVhat I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
