PATENT OFFICE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,632, dated January 12, 1904.
Application filedMay 2, 1903. Serial No. 155,352. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Rousn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. a
My invention relates to certain improvements in wrenches, more particularly attachments therefor.
It has for its object to provide for the manipulation of either an angular or cylindrie body as, for instance, a nut or pipe, &c.-and is adapted to awrench of ordinary or approved construction.
It consists of a supplementalor detachable jaw having its face adapted more particularly for application to cylindric bodies or surfaces and to be readily applied to the fixed-jaw member of a wrench and means therefor of peculiar construction substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 discloses the same as applied for use. Fig. 2 is an end view with part of the fixed jaw broken away. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the improvement, with the clamping or locking bar swung laterally out of engagement with one of the arms'of the yoke.
It will be understood that latitude is allowed herein as to details which may be changed as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain protected.
In the carrying out of my invention I provide a jaw 1, having, preferably, an inclined serrated or ratchet face, although the same may be curvilinear, according to the surface to be engaged. Said jaw is connected, preferably, to a yoke or staple-like device 2, having the upper connecting portion of its arms adapted to pass through an aperture produced laterally through the lower end of said jaw, said yoke being of malleable metal to permit of its being passed through said aperture or passage initially and then having its arms brought in parallel alinement. Said yoke, which is designed to provide for the ready application of said jaw to the fixed-jaw member of the wrench, as readily observed from the drawings, has its arm members provided with screw-threads 3, extending suitable lengths along said arms and upon which are fitted nuts 4, having thumb manipulating extensions 4: at their lower ends to facilitate the manipulation of turning of said nuts. Said yoke is provided with a clamping-bar 5, through an aperture 5 of which passes one arm of said yoke, while the other end of said bar is provided with a laterally -opening slot 5, having the func" tion of a hook or catch and adapted to engage the opposite arm of said yoke, being swung laterally to and from the same in effecting the engagement and disengagement of said bar with and from said arm of said yoke, Said clamp-bar is adapted to have also a sliding movement upon the arms of said yoke for its adjustment or movement toward or away from the wrench-jaw member in effecting the adjustment or detachment of the supplemental pipe-jaw from said jaw member. In order to effect the holding of said clamp-bar in locked position, it is only required to properly manipulate or turn the thumb-nuts 4 upon the screw-threads of the arms of said yoke toward said bar, which provides for the ready holding or application of said jaw in position upon the wrench-jaw member. In order to remove said detachable pipe-jaw when it is notneeded for use and it is desired to manipulate an angular body, as a nut, &c., it is only necessary to reverse the movement of said nuts, which will permit said looking-bar to be moved away from the wrench-jaw member and swing said lock-bar away from one arm of the yoke, when the whole can be bodily removed from the wrench-jaw member.
This contrivance or attachment, it will thus be observed, is simple and readily constructed, cheap of manufacture, and is applicable to any form of wrench having the ordinary fixed-jaw member. Therefore it constitutes an article of manufacture or commerce in itself and could be placed on sale separately from the wrench proper and applied for use, as above stated,
without requiring the purchase of a new wrench.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A supplemental or removable jawliaving an attachingyoke provided with a pivoted clamp-bar with one end adapted to be engaged with or disengaged from one arm of said yoke and means for the retention of said clamp-bar in locked position.
2. Aremovable or supplemental jaw having an attaching-yoke provided with a laterallyswinging clamp-bar with one end adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from one arm of said yoke, and thumb-nuts engaging the arms of said yoke and said clamp-bar.
3. Aremovable or supplemental jaw having an attaching-yoke passing laterally through said jaw, near the lower end, and a pivoted clamp-bar, with one end adapted to be engaged with, .or disengaged from, one arm of said yoke, and means adapted to hold said clampbar in locked position.
4:. A removable or supplemental jaw having an attaching-yoke connected to 'said jaw, near its lower end, a clamp-bar pivoted upon one arm of said yoke and having one end adapted to be engaged with, or disengaged from, the other arm of said yoke, said yoke having screw threads extending along the same a suitable distance from their lower ends, and thumb-nuts engaging said screw-threads and provided with lateral thumb extensions.
5. Aremovable or supplemental jaw having an attaching-yoke provided with thumb-nuts and a pivoted clamp-bar having near one end a laterally-opening slot adapted to serve as a hook or catch for engagement with one arm of said yoke, said clamp-bar being held by said nuts in locked position.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
