SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 304,637, dated September 2, 1884. Application filed July 19, 1884. (No model.)

Be it known that we, GEoRGnD. GOODELL and THOMAS B. BENT, citizens of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Bein-Holders; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figuresof reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken through the pivot.

This invention has relation to holding attachments to be used on reins or lines to assist the driver in restraining a hard mouthed or pulling horse; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter Adesignates the handle, which is of elongated form, curved at one end to give purchase for the grasp of the hand, as indicated at B.

0 represents the other end of the handlearm, which is made with a convex face, D, transversely serrated, and is provided with a threaded perforation for a pivot-screw, E.

F indicates the short or lever arm which extends outward from the biting-j aw G. This jaw consists of a lateral flange, H, and transverse biting projections K, the planes of which are oblique. Between these projections K there is an interval, L. By means of the 0 pivot-screw E, which passes through the perforation min the flange H into the head of the holder-arm A, this jaw G is connected to said head in such position that the reins can be easily slipped in laterally between the free ends of the biting projections K and the convex serrated face D of the handle-head. Then by turning the lever-arm F down upon the reins the projections K and the face D are made to clamp the reins securely. In this position the lever F is on one side of the reins and the handle A on the'other side thereof. The attachment can then be grasped and the reins will be held securely.

This holding attachment is easily and quickly applied to the reins and readily removed therefrom. It does not mar or otherwise inj ure the reins, and will be found effective in its operation.

Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. The combination, with the biting-j aw, consisting of the flange H, having the transverse biting projections K, and'the lever-arm F, of the pivoted head 0, having the convex serrated face D, substantially as specified.

2. The rein-holder attachment consisting of the curved handle-arn1 A, having the convex serrated head C, and the biting-jaw G, consisting of the projections K K, separated by an interval, L, the flange H, carrying said projections and pivoted to the head of the han dle-arm, and the lever F, substantially as specified.
