JOHN T. LANDERS, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
' CONVERTIBLE MONKEY AND PIPE WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1906.
Application filed June '7, 1906. Serial No. 320,550.
To ail whont it WI/CZ/y concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. LANDERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Monkey and Pipe \Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a combination monkey and pipe wrench, whereby the former is converted readily and easily into the latter; and the object is to overcome the necessity of having to labor under the inconvenience of using two separate wrenches for two different purposes where one would answer for both purposes as intended, thereby economizing time and labor, thus avoiding the inconvenience of looking after separate wrenches for doing the work one would answer for.
To this end the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more in detail described and specifically claimed.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal side elevation of a monkey-wrench having my improved attachment applied thereto. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views of said improved attachment.
Referring by letter to the annexed drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding )arts, A designates a wrench of the monkey-type construction, which of course in itself forms no part of my invention, but only so far as when used in combination therewith of the attachment.
B and B designate the usual twin grippingjaws, the former, B, being rigidly secured to one and the forward end of a shank C, and the latter or opposite jaw B having an opening or slot therethrough by which it is slidably secured upon said shank, this sliding jaw B having a slotted extension or lug D, through which the shank C is also passed. This extension or lug D of the movable jaw B is provided with a socket d in its lower or rear portion, in which an adjustingscrew D, having a thumb-nut E secured thereon at its rear end, takes, through the medium of which the movable jaw is adjusted relatively to or from the stationary jaw.
F designates a detachable pipe-wrench attachment or jaw of peculiar construction and to which great importance is attached. This jaw is formed of one piece of metal and is vertically bifurcated into two integral gripping parts formed parallel with each other. The upper portion of this jaw for about midway its length is of rectangular form, the point of indication being shown at f in Figs. 2 and 3. From thence to the lower portion thereof it is angular and terminates in aright-angular lip or flange, as at and), upon the forward edges of said jaw and fits snugly up to and beneath the lower end of the stationary jaw B, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Upon the rear edges or angular portions of the jaw F are formed teeth G, which serve as gripping-surfaces by which a pipe is firmly held in position when the wrench is in use.
H designates a set-screw which engages a socket h, formed centrally in the upper portion of the jaw F, by means of which tension is given to the jaw, as occasion requires.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of my device will be obvious, but may be briefly rehearsed as follows: In the operation of my device when the operator desires simply a monkey-wrench my attachment or pipe-j aw is detached from the shank of the monkey-wrench by unscrewing the set-screw located in the rear and upper portion of the pipe-jaw, and the implement from which it is detached becomes a monkeywrench, and if a pipe-wrench is desired it can be readily converted into the same by slipping the said pipe-j aw over the shank of the monkey-wrench and between the stationary and movable jaws of the same and then tightening up the set-screw. The implement will then become a pipe-wrench or alternately a monkey and pipe wrench, thus serving a twofold purpose, thus overcoming the trouble and inconvenience that two separate wrenches would occasion, and other numerous advantages are also derived from a wrench of this character. This wrench attachment will [it all sizes of monkey-wrenches and can be applied instantly and can be used to either jaw of wrench. wrench can be converted into a pi e-wrench, also be used independently of t e attach- The monkeyment. This attachment will work on a in the rear of the supplemental jaw for the 10 smaller pipe than others, also work on as adjustment thereof.
large a pipe as wrench will take. In testimony whereof I have signed my Having thus described my invention, what name to this specification in the presence of I claim is v two subscribing witnesses.
