IMPROVEMENT ni winnaars.
JAMES MGLAREN, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK. vLettere .Patent No. 59,852, dated November 20, 1866.
SPECIFICATION- T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES McLAREN, of the city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have invented a new and improved Wrench, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specication, in
which- Figure l, is a side view of my improved wrench.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through it.
Figure 3 is an edge or back view of the wrench.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of my invention is to apply to the back of the sliding-jaw frame of a screw-wrench a pivoted spring-jaw, and to extend and so contract the fixed jaw as to form in conjunction with the pivoted jaw a pipewrench, thus combining in a very simple and convenient manner a pipe-wrench with ascrew-wrench, as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand invention I will describe itsconstruction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the stock or handle of the wrench, on one end of which is a T- head which forms two xed jaws, Z) and a; the jaw a'is constructed with an angular notch in it, the surfaces of which are serrated, and the jaw b is constructed similar to a common screw-wrench. Upon the handle, A, is a sliding-jaw, B, `corresponding to the jaw b, and formed on a frame, B', which is connected by a lip, c, with a nut, d, as shown in figs.' l and 2. The nut d is constructed with a collar upon it, in which is formed an annular groove, e, that receives the lip c on the jaw-frame B. The nut OZ moves over the screw-threads which are formed jaw, A..
on the handle' A, as shown Vin the drawings, and by means of this nut the-jaw is moved toward and from its fixed On the back edge of the jaw-frame B', and at that end nearest the nut d, is a projection, lo, having a slot in it for receiving the rear endof a jaw, G, whichA is pivoted to said projection by the transverse pin, e. This jaw G proceeds forward to the end of frame BV', at' which'jioint it is enlarged, hevelled, and serrated, as shownat g, so as to serve, in conjunction with the notch in iXed jaw a, to iirmly gripe and hold a pipe, as shown in g. l. The rear or pivoted end of the jaw G is inserted into the projection je of frame B in sich manner that the strain upon the jaw in turning a pipe will be resisted conjointly by this projection and the pivot c', thus relieving the latter to a considerable extentvfrom undue strain. IIhe jaw Gr has a spring, t, applied to it for keeping it in place against frame B when not in immediate use this spring will yield and allow the jaw to'accominodate itself to a pipe, and when the wrench is turned backward the spring h will allow the jaw freedom to become detached from a pipe. .The spring h not only serves tp keep the jaw Gclose against frame B when the pipe-wrench is not used, but when in use, and the instrument is moved backward upon a pipe, this spring will keep the jaw G in close contact with thepipe, so as to prevent slipping when thel instrument is again moved forward.
I am aware that serrated camjaws have been applied to a sliding-jaw frame, B', and used in conjunction with a fixed serrated jaw as a pipe-wrench, and therefore I do not claim a cam-jaw. y
What I claim-as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-described toolvasa new article of manufacture.
JAMES McLAREN.
