`TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that'we, GEORGE BALPWIN and ALLEN B. CHASE, of Italy Hill, in the county of Yates, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Press for Packing Wool; and we 'do hereby declare that the vfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a birdseye view.

Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section.

The letters of reference refer to the same parts in each figure.

A is a table. It is made any size to suit and be' convenient for the user. The frame of the table may be' made in any ordinary manner that will admit the cross-pieces that hold the hinged portion of the top and the supports for the rolling-catch E and treadle F. B and B are the sides of the folding-box. They constitute a .i portion of the table-*op when not put up to form the sides of the box, as shown in -the figures. They are hinged i" to the centre-piece L. They are provided with a spring-latch that is secured to theunder side, as show in fig. 2, where one is raised and held by the catch E, and the other is in a horizontal position. C and C lare also sides of the folding-box. They are hinged to the centre-piece, as shown in the figures. r 4D andgD are spring-latches. They are fastened to the under side of the parts B B. The lower end is made ilexible, so as to passby the catches on the rolling-catch E. lll'is a rolling-catch; it is made as shown in iig. 2. The dotted lines show it rolled over one-fourth of a revolution, so as to disengage the latches and allow the sides B and B to fall back to the'plane of thetop of the'table. It is provided with a lever, I, at thefupper side, as shown in iig. 1. This lever I is connected tothe treadle, so that a downward motion of the treadle will `partly roll over v the catches and disengage the latches. At the end is a weighted arm, G, that causes the v'catches to turn back i again, when the latches are disengaged by turning down the sides of the box. This piece may be supported by pieces fastened to the frameof the table, as shown in fig. 2. E is a treadle, and is shown in ig. 2. It is used to unlatch the latches D by putting the foot upon it, so that with the foot the box may b laid open after the wool is tied, thus leaving the hands free to'handle the wool. G is a'weighted larm on the end of the roller E, as shown in iig. 2. H is a connection between the treadle and rolling-catch. I is a lever upon the rolling-catch. J is one of the catches on the roller, and is represented` by dotted lines in g. 2. K is the twine that the wool Vis tied with. It is placed in grooves or channels in the sides of the box, as shown in each iignre. L is the centre-piece, to which the sides of the box are hinged. It is fastened to cross-pieces in the frameof the table and constitutes the bottom of the box. MM are spring-catches, recessed into the surface of the sidesB and B so as to spring outward and catch the sides C and C while the wool is being packed and tied.

'To use our invention, place the twine in the grooves so that it may be conveniently tied; then place a. leece of wool upon the table with the inside next to the table; then fold in the edges of the fleece so that it will all lie upon the leaves of the table that form the sides of the box. The sides of the box B andB are then raised upward until the spring catches D and D catch into the notches `of the roller E. Then raise the sides C and C until they will beheld by the spring-catches M and M; then securely tie the twine; then place the foot upon'the treadle and bear downward until the springs D and D are disengaged from the roller; then the 5 .sides of the box will fall down tothe plane of the top of the table; then remove the tied ileece and proceed as before.

Having thus fully described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
