Description

- gutter: gram E. M. PAYNJE, or W'AVERLY, NEW YORK. Letters Patent No. 61,681, dated January 29, 1867.
IMPROVED FOLDING AND GOT BEDSTEAD.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON-OERNi Be it known that I, E. M. PAYNE, of Waverly, in the county of Tioga, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in Bed Bottom; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,-'and exact description thereoflwhich will enable others skilled in the art to make and usethe same, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the upper frame, of my improved bed bottom, illustrating my improvement, part of the side rail being broken away to show the construction.
Figure 2 is avertical cross-section of the. same, taken through the line a. x, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of my improved bed bot-tom, patented August 14, 1866, and. numb'ered 57,181; and it consists in making the upper frame of my said improved bed bottom removable, and in combining therewith hinged or jointed legs and casters, so'that it'may be used as a cot or as a trundle bed, as may be required. v
B is the upper frame 'ofmyimproved bed bottom, which, in Patent No. 57,181, is described as resting upon the half-elliptic springs. This frame'B, l: make removable, so that it can be removed from the said springs and from the frame upon which the said springs rest, ,and by which they are supported. The end pieces of the frame B-are made higher than its side pioees,'so as to furnish bearings for the rollers G. Gris the sacking, which is attached to the sides of the rollers C, and is strained or tightened by revolving one or both of the said rollers. To enable this to be done conveniently, I make one or more ofthe journals c of the said rollers G- of such a length as to project beyond the endpieees of the frame B, and square the projecting end or ends of said journal or journals so that it may be grasped a wrench or key and-revolved. The rollers C are held in the:
position to which they have been revolved by one or more ratchet-wheels E-attached to their. ends, and by tho pawls Fpivotedto the end pieces of the frame B,'and which take hold of the teeth ofthe said ratchet-wheels E,
as shown in fig. 2. The side pieces of the frame B' are slotted longitudinally,-as shown in figs. 1 and 2, the central and end parts being left solid for the attachment of the half-elliptic springs when used in connection there-' with. In the ends of these slots which are toward the head and foot of the bed bottom are pivoted the-legs I, which, when not in use, shut up into the said slots so as to be entirely out of the way.' The legs I are so formed and pivoted in the ended the said slots that when opened out to support the bed bottom, their lower ends may be inclined towards the head and fob t,ias shown in fig. 1, so thatth'e weight of the bed" bottom itself may hold them securely in place. J are casters, attached to the under side of the frame B at its four corners, so that when the legs I are folded down, or are not used, the said frame may restand roll upon the said casters, and be capable-of being-used as a trundlc'bedw The legs I and casters Jmayboth be attached at the same time to the frame B, or either ofv them separately, as may bedesired. v
I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent The combination and arrangement of the casters J and the folding legs I, whereby the device is adapted for use as a bed bottom, trundle bed, or cot, substantially as herein shown and described;
The above specification of my inventiion signed by me this 8th day of September, 1866.
E. M. PAYNE.
