I IMPROVEMENT IN WOOL-BOXES.
tlge Stlgttule referat tu it 'time ettcts atevt mit mating part nt tige tiene.
*gew- TO AIIL WHOM 1T MAY CONCERN v Beit known that I, CARMI WIGHTMAN, of Batavia, in the county of Kane, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wool-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a. part` of this specification, in Whichv Figure 1 is a perspective representation of my invention.
Figure 2, a. sectional elevation of the same', ltaken through the line X X, iig. 1.
Figure 3, drawing 2, a plan view of the invention.
Figure 4, same drawing, a vertical longitudinal sectional elevation.
This-invention relates to a conveniently-arranged box, designed especially forfolding and tying wool- I'leeces in a marketable manner; and its nature consists in .the use of a. substantial wooden frame, standing on legs, and supporting -a bed-piece of such size as the fleece is to have when folded; and also four leaves, hinged to said bed-piece, and arranged to'havea. fiat surface when opened for-receiving the fleece, and to be raised up for folding it. And further, in a novel arrangement, whereby twine used for tying the iicece after being folded is held in aconvenient position. i
In order to give a correct understanding of my invention, I have marked corresponding parts with similar letters, and will now give suchv a detailed description as will enable others skilled in the art to make and use it.
A B represent a box frame, made of wood, and supported onlegs L, and having its corners rigidly fastened, and twine-boxes,- Z Z, at the ends and under the leaves D, the frame A` B forming three sides of said boxes, and the sliding guides F F the other side. l
These guides are rigidly attached to a bed-piece, I, and are made to runv in grooves, G Gr, cut i'n the inner sides of the side-pieces BB, iig. 1, andthus-cause the long leaves Cv C, hung to said bed-piece I, to be evenly adjusted in the notches E cut in the end-pieces A A, when folding a eece. TheA short leaves, D, are also hung to the bed-piece I, and are arranged to fold between the leaves C yC, and thus forma rectangular box. Spring catches, H, being attachedito the inside of leaves C C, hold leaves D in place at their outer sides, and the pins" ff their inner sides, whilc the iieece is being tied. A block, W, tig. 2, drawing 1, is rigidly attachedto one of the sides, B, iig. 2, and is made to support a pulley, P, over which a cord, M, is made to run. This cord is attac-hed to and near the top of a cross-piece, N, put longitudinally witlrthe-leaves C C, and between the guides F F, to which it is fastened and also attached to the Vbed-piece I. IThe cord M passes under the piece N, over the pulley,P, anddown to a lever, K, to which it is u'ttached,'as seen at iig. 1, and used in conjunction with said leverfor raising -the side'leaves C C out of notches E after ileecehns been folded, and preparatory to putting another on the table. I l
' Operation.
Balls of twine, suitable for tying wool, s hould be put in the box Z', and the ends of the twine brought thoughthe holes a'b, in the edges ofthe leaves D D, iig.l 1, 'drawing 1, and balls of twine should be put in box Z, and the vends of the twine brought through the holese c c in the side B, and .through tbeiholes e in the edges of the leaves C C. This will cause the twine g, running Afrom separate boxes,.Z Z, when the leaves C D are spread, to cross at right-angles, as seen at iig. 3, -drawingQl In order to clearly-show how the leaves D C` are operated, I will ,first refer to iig. 1, which represents the box closed, as when a fleece is folded. To open the leaves, all that is required is to place one footon the lever K, and bear gently downward, which will cause the cord M, passing under the cross-piece N, to raise the hed I, iig. 2, drawing 1, and iig. f4, drawing 2, up even with the top ofthe box-frame A B. This will cause theleaves C C to spread out, as seen. at Iig.- 3, drawing 2,
and the leaves D D to -ll the spaces between-them, and form a. tabie of suitable size for holding a eece before being folded. VAfterja ee'cehas been laid Hat on thetable, no w formed, and on the top of the twine g, the leaves C should be raisedupl by handto a vertical position, as seen at yfig. 2, drawing 1, which operation will cause the-bed I to settle down in the frame B, and leave the leaves DD in inclined positionsnas .seen at fig.
4, drawing 2. They can then be raised up by hand, which will form n. box, as seen at g.`1, with the folded leece inside. The twine g should now be drawn tightly round the fleece and tied, which will complete the operation. n I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The leaves C C, D D, bed I, frame A B, guides F F, cross-piece N, in combination with lever K, pulley P, and cord M, the whole being eonstructed and arranged to raise and lower said leuvesyv'substantally as set forth OARMI WIGHTMAN. l
