SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,145, dated October 16, 1888.

Be it known that I, CHARLES HENDERSON HARDIN, of Shelby, in the county of Cleveland and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is an exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same, showing the lid partly raised and the slot 0, the slot E, and the rivet D on opposite sides of box. Fig. 3 is a view showing the lid thrown back and in position to be passed under the box. Fig. 4 is also a view of same, showing the box open and the lid standing in an upright position.

lhe object of my invention is to preserve the lids of boxes, always keeping them attached to the boxes to which they belong,and making it convenient for showing goods in show-windows or cases, as the lid can be left in any position.

My invention consists ofa box and lid having I slots through which rivets or pins are passed, and is so constructed as to allow the box to be easily opened and the lid left in a convenient position, as shown in Fig. 4, or it may readily he slipped entirely under the box.

The box A is provided with slots E on either side, as shown in Fig. 2. The lid B is also provided with slots 0 on either side. Rivets D are passed through the slots 0 E and are secured by the ordinary metal plates so as to slide in the slots. When the lid Bis raised up,the rivet D slips up toward the top of the box A through the slot E,and also slips toward the center of lid B in the slot O,allowing the lid B to pass over the end of the box A, as shown in Fig. 2. (More clearly shown in Fig. 3.)

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the box A, having the slot E, the lid B, having the slot G, and the rivet D,passing through these slots,as set forth.
