FOLDING BED AND CRIB.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,258, dated February 1.9, 1895.

auxiliary attachments therefor, and has for y its object to provide a simple, cheap, readily constructed and perfectly operating device of this character, which shall comprise a main bed, and a smaller bed or crib secured upon the same and removable therefrom; a further object of the invention being to provide such` a device as may conveniently be folded substantially out of sight, and which may be wholly inclosed from view by a curtain or other casing or covering.

The invention consists in the novel construction and-arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described'.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like letters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout, Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention, the same being lowered and ready for occupancy the auxiliary bed or crib being also secured in place. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device when folded u p and raised, after using.

In the practice of my invention,I construct two perpendicular bars or standards A, of a height slightly greater than the contemplated length of the bed, and these standards I connect near the lower ends by cross-bars A', which have intervening the same the vertical bars A2. In frontof the standards A, and slightly removed therefrom, are smaller supports B, of a height determinable by that desired for the bed, which said supports are joined to the standardsAby the bars B', and are themselves connected near the bottom by the laterally ranging cross-bar B2.

In the joints connecting the bars B and B are journaled longitudinal rods C, which extend from a point adjacent to the standards A to the forward end or foot of the bed, and are connected at either end by cross-bars C. ing as stops to limitthe outward movementY of the supports E, which are journaled upon the foremost bar C and. are connected by bars E. These supports E, when the bed is lowered, may be further secured by the hook F, pivotcd to the shaft D, and engaging with one of the said supports E.

Upon one of the shafts D are mounted, in such manner as to slide horizontally thereon, sockets G, formed in two sections and united bymeans ofthe screws G', which, upon their withdrawal, permit of the said sockets being removed from the shaft D. UponY the outer sections of the sockets are secured, or formed integrally therewith, rods H, connected near each end by the cross-bars H.

Between the free ends of the rods H is secured a rod H2, on which is loosely journaled va side railing or frame I. Upon each of the end rods H are journaled similar but smaller frames or railings J, the outer vertical bars of which are extended downwardly to form supports J', and the said railings have attached thereto hooks J2 which engage with sockets or eyes I upon the side railing I.

Afterthe frame-work ofthe device and the several parts herein-beforedescribed have been formed, I secure to the bars C and C of the main bed, a wire netting K, of any desired construction, and to the bars H and I-I of the auxiliary bed or crib, I secure a similar netting K. Any equivalent device or mattress may be used in place of this net' device simpler in construction and lighter.

The operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection withthe accompanying drawings. When it is desired to use the device, the bed-frame, which is pivoted in the joints of the bars B and B', is lowered by pulling anyvof the rods C, C', of which its frame is composed, the supports E being drawn obliquely outward, and fastened by means of the hook F. The auxiliary bed or crib, whichslides on one of the shafts D, is caused to assume the position shown in Fig.

l by raising the side railings I and the end railings J to the vertical position, and locking the same by means of the hooks J2, the extensions J of the said end railings serving as supports for the device. then moved upon the shaft D to rest at the desired distance from the head or foot of the bed. The main bed may then be occupied as ordinarily, the auxiliary bed serving for the reception of a child, to whom access from the bed is thereby permitted, and who is prevented from falling therefrom by means of the railings I and J, or the said auxiliary bed may be utilized as a receptacle for lamps, books, medicines, or other useful articles, which it is desired to have at hand, and by hinging the railings J independently of the supports J', the said railings may be extended outwardly to the horizontal posit-ion, and the whole form an auxiliary bed of almost equal length with the main bed, thereby serving as a couch or repository for an invalid while the main bed is being re-arranged.

Then the bed is not in use, the hooks F and J2 are detached, the main bed is raised upwardly to the position illustrated in Fig. 2, the railings I and J being extended to the horizontal position as shown, and the auxiliary bed is swung inwardly, the sockets G turning upon the shaft D, whereby the whole is folded against the under side of the netting K. The supports E are also permitted to drop downwardly over one of the railings J, thus serving to retain the auxiliary bed in the position shown, the said supports being also, if desired, so connected to the shafts D or the rods C by means of springs that the same will be held normally in such depending position.

The main bed is preferably journaled in the supports B so as to sustain itself in the raised position of its own weight by passing the center of gravity when so raised, but to further secure the same from falling, I provide a notched metallic spring catch M, which is secured to the rod B2, and engages with the head bar C when the device is raised; also, as before stated, I inclose the whole device by means of acurtain or other suitable covering, which is to be secured to the angular bar L.

I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A combined folding-bed and crib, comprising a main bed-frame journaled in suitable supports, adapted to be raised and lowered, and having a rod or shaft upon the side thereof, and a crib comprising a frame having sockets thereon, surrounding the said rod, railings pivoted to the three outer sides of the said frame, adapted to be held in a vertical or horizontal position the end rail- The crib is ings being extended to form supports for the crib, and means for locking the railings in an upright position, substantially as shown and described. i

2. A combined folding-bed and crib comprising a main bed-frame journaled in suitable supports, adapted to be raised and lowered, and having a rod or shaft upon the side thereof, and a crib comprising a frame having sockets thereon surrounding and sliding upon the said rod, the said crib being removable therefrom, railings pivoted to the said frame at its outer side and at the ends adapted to be held in averticalor horizontal position, the bars of the end railings being extended to form supports for the crib, and hooks upon the said railings adapted to secure the same in an upright position, substantially as shown and' described.

3. A combined folding-bed and crib comprising two or more standards having supports in front thereof, a main bed-frame journaled in the said supports, adapted to be raised and lowered, means for holding the same in a raised position, a rod or shaft upon the side of the said bed-frame, and a crib comprising a frame having sockets thereon surrounding the said rod, railings pvoted to the three outer sides of the said frame, adapted to be held in a vertical or horizontal position, the end railings being downwardly extended to form supports for the device, and hooks adapted to hold the said railings in an upright position, substantially as shown and described.

It. A combined folding-bed and crib cornprising two or more standards, smaller supports in front of the saine and secured thereto, a main bed-frame journaled in the said supports, adapted to be raised and lowered, means for holding the said frame in a raised position, and supports at the foot of the bedframe adapted to fold upon the same, a rod or shaft depending from the bed-frame at the side thereof, and a crib comprising a frame having sockets thereon surrounding and sliding upon the said rod, and removable therefrom, railings pivoted to the said frame at its outer side and at the ends, adapted to be held in a vertical or horizontal position, the bars of the end railings being downwardly extended to form supports for the crib, and hooks upon the said railings adapted to secure the same in an upright position, substantially as shown and described.
