COMBINED BASSINET AND SWING.
Application filed December 16, 1921. Serial No. 522,833.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HELEN S. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Dubuque, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have ,invented certain new and pseful Improvements in Combined Bassinets and Swings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined bassinet or cradle, and swing, for infants, or young children.
The objects of my invention are, to provide in a single device, a structure which may be readily converted from a bassinet or cradle into a porch swing, toprovide a device of this character which may be collapsed and stored for shipment in a small space, to provide a device of the above men tioned character which maybe collapsed or assembled quickly and easily, to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein the reinforcing elements of the bassinet element may be readily removed so that thebassinet element may be washed, to provide a bassinet element which is reversible, to provide means to prevent the swinging of the bassinet element, and to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is neat and attractive in appearance.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description. 1
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention, c
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, with the bassinet element shown in central longitudinally vertical section,
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device,
Fig. 1 is a transverse section taken on line44 of Fig. 2, v
Fig. 5 is a similar view with one side of the bassinet element moved inwardly upon the bottom of the same, so that the device may be used as a swing,
Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the frame of the device, the elements being partly separated and collapsed,
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the frame work of the bassinet element, and,
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the rings for connecting the strips of the sides of the bassinet element with the strips in the ends.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the supporting frame for the bassinet element, which is collapsible, embodies a pair of uprights or standards 10, rigidly secured at their lower ends to feet or pedestals 11, transversely arranged, as shown. The numeral 12 designates the lower connecting bars, the outer ends of which are connected with the lower ends of the uprights 10 by hinges 13. These hinges limit the downward movement of the bars 12 below the horizontal, but permit of these bars being swung upwardly. The inner ends of the bars 12 are pivotally connected by a hinge 14:, arranged beneath the same. This hinge l4: prevents the bars 12 being swung downwardly below the horizontal position, but permit of the same being swung upwardly, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 6. Pivotally connected with the bars 12, at 15, are diagonal brace rods or bars 16, preferably arranged upon opposite sides of the bars 12. These diagonal brace rods 16 are provided near their upper free ends with transverse notches 17 receiving headed elements, such as screws or pins 18, rigidly secured to the uprights 10, as shown. It is obvious that the diagonal braces 16 serve to lock the uprights 10 in the vertical position. p
The numeral 19 designates an upper connecting bar, provided near its ends and upon its opposite sides with notches 20, forming reduced portions 21, adapted for-insertion within vertical openings or notches 22, formed in the tops of the uprights 10. It is thus seen that a secure detachable joint is thereby effected between the upper ends of the uprights 10 of the ends of the connecting bar 19.
The numeral 23 designates a bassinet element as a whole. This bassinet element embodies a bottom piece 24, formed of fabric, and this bottom piece is provided with longitudinal hems 25, preferably open at their ends. The bottom piece is also provided with transverse hems 26, the opposite ends of which are preferably open. The longi tudinal hems are adapted to receive longitudinal preferably metallic bars 27 of a bottom frame 28, and the transverse hems 26 receive transverse preferably metallic bars 29. The bars 2'? and 29 are detachably connected by means of bolts 30 or the like. It is thus seen that the bars 27 and 29 may be removed from within the hems 25 and 26, and this is done when it is desired to launder the bassinet element. The bassinet element further comprises fabric end pieces 31, suitably secured to the bottom piece 24:, and provided at their tops with transverse hems 32, having their ends open, and receiving upper transverse bars'38, which are preferably metallic. These bars may be re moved from the hems '32. The bars are provided with openings 34, for receiving suspension elements or cords 85, converging upwardly for connection with a ring 36. The cords also pass through openings 37 in the hems. The rings 36 detachably engage hooks38, secured to the upper ends of theuprights' 10, as shown. The numeral designates side pieces, which are provided attheir tops with longitudinal hems 40, receiving bars 41, the ends of the hems being open sothat the bars may be removed therefrom. The bars'33 and ll are detachably connected at their ends by rings 4L2, passing through-openings 43 and as. These rings,
Fig, 8,are each formed of a pair of sections 45, hinged at 46, and having detachable interlocking ends 427, which are separated by a lateral movement of one end with relation to the other. 7
Means are provided to prevent the bassinet element from swinging, the same comprising-apair of lower books 48., normally arranged out of the path of travel of the suspension elements 35. When it is desired to prevent the'bassinet element from swing ing, one or more of the suspension elements, such asthe central one, is brought into the hook e8.
In view of the foregoing description, it is obvious that the device may be employed as "a bassinet, and the sides 39 are then in the upper'position, with their bars ll connected with the bars 33, by the rings 4:2. The bassinet element may be free to swing, or may be held against swinging by the hooks 48. ",VVhen it is desired to use the device as aporch swing, one side piece 31) maybe disconnected, and folded inwardly, Fig. 5, and'the cushion or mattress 49 may be arranged upon the side piece when thus disposed.
It is obvious that the bassinet element may be readily disconnected from the supporting frame, and by disconnecting the bars 33 and 41, such bassinet element may be folded flat. The supporting frame may also be collapsed, so that all parts of the device may be folded flat. The supportingframe may also be collapsed, so that all parts of the device may be placed within a sack, of relatively small size, and conveniently handled in shipment.
It is .to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
A device of the character described, comprising a supporting frame, a combined cradle and hammock element including a fabric bottom having longitudinal and transverse hems, longitudinal and transverse bars removably mounted within said hems anddetachably connected witheach other, fabric end pieces secured to the bottom and providedat their upper ends with hems, flat bars removably mounted within the last named hems and arranged on edge in substantially vertical planes'and provided with spaced apertures, the outer apertures being arranged adjacent to the ends of-said substantially flat bars, fabric side pieces secured-to said bottom and provided at their upper ends with hems, substantially flat bars removably mounted within the hems and adapted to be arranged on edge in substantially vertical planes, said last named bars being provided adjacent to-their ends with apertures, rings adapted for insertion through the apertures in the ends of the bars of the end piecesand side pieces and serving to detachably connect them, either side piece being adapted to be disconnected from the end pieces and folded inwardly upon said fabric bottom, whereby the device will serve as a hammock, flexible elements having their lower ends passed through the apertures in the substantially flat bars in said end pieces, and means for connecting the flexible elements with the, supporting frame.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
HELEN S. "BURNS.
