SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 523,903, dated July 31, 1894.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that we, COLIN CAMPBELL Mo- PHEE and IVOR EDMUND BROOK, both subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in Ohatham, countyof Kent, Province of Ontario, and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and Improved Chair-Got, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to folding furniture, and its object is to provide a new and improved chair-cot, which is simple and durable in construction, and arranged to permit of quickly changing the device into a comfortable and portable cut, with pillow attachment, or into a reclining chair having a back adjustable to any desired angle, and a leg rest that adapts itself simultaneously to the changed position of the chair back.

The invention comprises the construction and arrangements of parts hereinafter described.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement arranged in one position asa reclining chair. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improvement arranged as a cot. Fig. 3 is a side elevation arranged as a reclining chair. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the improvement arranged as a cot and showing the various positions of the parts in changing it from a chair to a cot. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the improvement folded up; and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the same.

The improved chair-cot is constructed with two side rails A and A, provided near their ends with legs B and B, each having two side rails B and B pivoted to the inside of the side rails A and A, as is plainly shown in the drawings. The two side rails B and B of each log, are connected with each other by cross bars B and B of which the uppermost cross bar engages the under side of the side rails A and A, at the time the said legs are extended, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 4.

The legs B and B are inclined upwardly and inwardly, so as to firmly support the side rails A and A. On the latter and on the outside thereof, is pivoted a frame 0, adapted to form the back of the reclining chair, or the foot end of the cot, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2. This frame 0, is provided with the side rails O and 0 connected with each other at their outer'ends by a cross bar 0 the lower or inner ends being pivotally connected with the side railsA and A, about one-third the length of the said side rails from the leg B.

The frame O, is adapted to be held in an inclined position by a brace D, provided with two arms D and D pivotally connected with the side rails O and O and connected with each other at their free ends by a cross bar D adapted -to engage sets of notches A formed in the top of the side rails A and A, so that the frame (J may be held in an inclined position, the degree of which varies according to the set of notches A engaged by the cross bar D The latter is also adapted to rest on the beveled rear ends of the side railsto support the frame 0 in a horizontal position when the device is used as a cot, as

shown in-Figs. 2 and 4.

On the forward end of the side rails Aand A, is held a rest E, adapted to form a head rest for the cot and a foot restfor thechair. This rest E is provided with two siderails E and E formed at their under side with notches near their middle, to engage pivots F and F respectively, secured on the forward ends of the side rails A and A. The side rails E and E are connected with each other by cross bars E and E arranged on one side of the pivots F and F, the said side rails being connected at their upper or inner ends by links G and G, with the side rails O and 0 respectively, of the frame 0.

- A covering material vH, of any approved construction is stretched over the frame 0, and also over that part of the side rails A and A, extending frorn'the said frame 0, to the rest'E; a second piece of covering material H then extends over the said rest E, from the pivots F, F, to the outermost cross bar E The covering material, H is tacked or otherwise secured at its upper end to the cross bar 0 of the frame 0, and on the upper edge of the side bars C and 0 then on part of the upper edges of the side rails A and A, and the other material H is likewise tacked to the side rails E and E of the rest E, to be fastened at its outer end to the cross bar E the said rest E, will swing accordingly, as its side rails are connected with the said frame by the links G and G.

When it is desired to give more inclination to the chair so as to arrange the seat part of the covering material H on the side rails A andA' in an inclined position, as illustrated in Fig. 3, then the rear leg 13' is folded between the side rails A and A, so that the outer ends of the said side rails A and A rest on the floor, with the other leg B inclined asshown in said Fig. 3.

When it is desired to form a cot out of the reclining chair, the operator first disengages the brace D, from the side rails A and A, and

then swings the brace upward upon the side rails C and (3 of the said frame, the latter then being-swung downward until the cross bar D isseated on the beveled ends of the side bars A, A as is plainly shown in Fig. 2. The links G and G are then swung downward into an inclined position below thesaid side rails, the rest E being temporarily lifted from itspivots F and F, to permit the said links to swing into the position described and shown in Fig. 2. The rest E, is then again engaged with its pivots F and F, so that the rest extends in an inclined position with the covering material inclined upward and outward from the pivots F and F on the side rails A and A.

When it is desired to fold the chair-cot,

then the operator swings both legs B and B inward between the side rails A and A as illustrated in Figs. 5 and. 6, and then the frame 0 is lowered into the position it occupies when the device is used as a cot, and the rest E, is unhooked from its pivots F and F, and folded over on top of the frame 0, as plainly shown in the said figures. It will be seen by this arrangement, the device can be readily changed into a comfortable reclining chair, or into a cot having an inclined head rest.

Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a chair cot of the kind described, the combination with the side rails, having supportinglegs and lateral pivot pins at one end, of the pivoted frame for theback of the chair, the foot restfr'ame having side bar's provided with a series of notches in their under sides, to adj ustably engage the saidpins, andlinks which connect the pivoted frameand foot-rest, as shown and described.

2. The improved chair-cot composed of parallel side rails, legs pivoted thereto on the inner side, a back-supporting frame pivoted on the outer sides of the same, a foot-rest pivoted on lateral pins and adjustable thereon and detachable therefrom, and a link connecting said frame and foot rest-{as shown and described, whereby the said parts thus pivoted to the side rails areadapted to be folded interiorly and exterior-1y thereof, as shown and described.
