ADRIAN SAMUEL HOWE, OF COLTON, CALIFORNIA.
CHOKER LOGGING-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, 1912.
Application filed February 23, 1911. Serial No. 610,437.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADRIAN SAMUEL HOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colton, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Choker Logging-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in choker logging hooks, especially for logging on rough uneven ground, or where a heavy cable hook that will lock shut is needed; and it is embodied in the construction and arrangement of parts presently to be described, and defined in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aview looking down upon the top of my choker logging hook, showing the body, the tongue, the cover with screws, and the mortised handle of the cam thrust; Fig. 2 is like Fig. 1, only the handle of the cam-thrust, the cover and the screws, are removed, showing the cam in the tongue with the cam-thrust locking the tongue with the hook closed giving an angle to line 4, 4, which would be straight if the cam-thrust had thrown back the tongue; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section elevation of all except the hook of Fig. 1, with the spring-pressed cam-thrust at the bottom of the recess; Fig. 4: is a cross-section of Fig. 1 through the center of the handle of the cam-thrust, showing the grooved sides of the body, secured by the tongued edges of the cover.
In the drawings, 1 designates the body of my invention, with the hook A, cable attachment hole B, cover groove D, lockgroove recess C, with holes for threaded bolt and cam-post; 2 is the lock-tongue with partly elliptical cam opening E; 3 is the operative cam, with lock handle F, spring Gr, and opening for the tenon of the campost 4; 5 designates the cover with its bind ing tongues I I, holes for bolts H and recess for lock-handle F.
The general operation of my invention is as follows: The parts are .put together by inserting the tenon end of the L shaped cam-thrust up through the central opening in the cover, securing the tenon in the mortised handle, placing the lower end of the L shaped cam-thrust in the cam opening in the tongue, and sliding the L shaped tongues of the cover in the L grooves on the inside of the body of the hook until the hole in the L cam-thrust can be seen through the campost hole, when the round tenon of the threaded cam-post is entered in the round hole in the cam-thrust, and the threaded post screwed up in its place; the screws are then put in to secure the cover. The spring G which is attached to the cam-thrust presses with its free end against the under side of the cover and retains the cam-thrust in the recess C. WVhen the chain is around a log and in the hook, the handle of the.
cam-thrust may be lifted up, thus lifting the cam-thrust slidingly on the cam post tenon, until the cam-thrust is lifted from the recess into which the spring had pressed it to lock the tongue back, then turn the L cam-thrust half way around thrusting out the tongue locking the hook as the spring again presses the L cam-thrust down into its recess. Reverse the operation and the tongue is thrust back and the hook unlocked. The grooved sides can be made lower to make the cover even with the hook.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a choker logging hook, a body portion terminating at one end in a hook, and having upon one side a recess, a lock member slidable upon said body member and adapted to close the mouth of the hook, and having a cam recess, a cam thrust member normally spring-held in the recess of the body portion but extending in part into the cam recess, and adapted to be withdrawn from the recess of the body portion so as to lie wholly within the cam recess, to permit movement of the lock member, and a cover attached to the body portion and holding said lock member and said cam thrust member in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADRIAN SAMUEL HOWE.
