M. R. FOWLKES. ADJUSTABLE PALETTB FOR ARTISTS. No. 486,710. Y Patented Nov. 22, 1892.
, Inventar Witnesses:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY R. FOWLKES, OF SELMA, ALABAMA.
ADJUSTABLE PALETTE FOR ARTISTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,710, dated November 22, 1892.
Application filed July 5, 1892. Serial No. 438,897. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern: Y
Be it known that I, MARY R. FovvLKEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Selma, in the county of Dallas and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Palettes for Artists; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in detail of block, guide, and attachments.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in adjustable palette attachments for use by artists, the object being to provide a simple and convenient device capable of attachment to the stretcher of any picture and which may be readily adjusted to meet the requirement, thereby saving the artist from the fatigue and inconvenience of carrying the palette and brushes in the hands.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter specified.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter Adesignates a portion of a frame or stretcher having my invention applied thereto.
The attachment comprises a block B, having a clamping-plate C and screw c for attachment to the end piece of the stretcher, as indicated. Hinged at its upper or outer edge to the opposite broad portion B of said block is a plate D, which is free to swing toward and away from the upper face of the block. Secured to said plate is a guide E, through which loosely passes and is held one end portion of a rod F, which is designed to extend along the side portion of the stretcher and at any desired elevation by means of the brace F, which is attached to the plate Dand is arranged to support said plate in any desired position with relation to the block B.
H designates the palette, which is preferably formed in two sections, having a hinged or folding connection, as indicated at h. Said palette is supported from the rod F by means of the arms I, having the loops or clasps i, which engage said rod and slide freely thereon. These arms have bends at J, which form supports for brushes.
K K are seats to receive oil and turpentine cans, which may be of the form indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
It Will be apparent that the device can be quickly attached to a stretcher by means of the clamp and that it may be brought to any convenient adjustment by means of the plate D, sliding rod F, and the sliding palette.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. The herein-described palette attachment, comprising a block having a clamp, a plate hinged to said block and provided with means for its adjustable angular support with relation thereto, the rod carried by said plate, and the palette adjustably carried by said rod, substantially as specied.
2. The herein-described palette, comprising a block having a clamp attachment, a plate connected to said block and having an adjustable support thereon, a guide on said plate, a rod held and sliding in said guide, and a hinged palette-board having a sliding connection with said rod, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflx mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
MARY R. FOVLKES.
