JOHN M. SHELTON, OF UNION orrY, TENNESSEE.
UMBRELLA-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,062, dated August 24, 1886.
Application filed July 6, 1886. Serial No. 207.187. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. SHEL'LON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Obion and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Umbrella-Supports,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a vehicle-seat having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, with the umbrella removed.
My invention relates to certain improvements in devices attached to a vehicle-seat for supporting an umbrella, whereby the same may be adjusted to different angles to shield the occupant; and it consists in the peculiar arrangement, construction, and combination of devices, which I shall hereinafter fully describe, and specifically claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and indicate the manner in which the same is carried out. v In the said drawings, A represents a vehicleseat of any well-known construction, and having a bar, B, rigidly bolted thereto, as shown in Fig. l.
0 represents the back of the seat, having a plate, I), bolted thereto in such manner as to leave a space between said plate and seat, thus forming a guide or channel, a, within which is adjusted a bar, E, whose lower end is pivotally secured at bto the upper end of the bar B, before referred to.
The plate D is provided Wllll a slot, 0. described on an arc, of which the pivot b is the center, and through this slot a suitable setscrew passes to engage and hold the bar E after it has been adjusted. .The upper end of the bar E extends-a suitable distance above the back of the seat, and is provided with a flattened head, (1, arranged at right angles with said back, as shown.
F represents the umbrella-holder constructed of tubular material, so as to receive and support the handle of the umbrella G, said handle being held by the set-screw H at the top of the holder, whereby it may be adjusted to different heights. The lower end of the holder F is bifurcated and straddles or passes down upon opposite sides of the flattened head at of the bar E, to which it is pivotally secured by the pivot or pin e,whereby said holder and umbrella may be adjusted back and forth and in lines at right angles with the adjustable movements of the bar E.
In the upper end of the head (I is formed a curved slot described about the pivot e, and through this slot and bifurcated portion of the holder F a set-screw, h, passes, the end of the screw being engaged bya thumb-nut, Z,whereby the holder is securely held after adjustment, but is readily released and its adjustment changed by simply unscrewing said nut. From the description of these parts it is clearly evident that I am enabled to secure any adjustment laterally as well as frontand back, and accomplish the same by the simple arrangement of the several features before mentioned.
I am aware it is not broadly new to attach an umbrella-holder to a vehicle-seat in such manner as to secure variable adjustments, and such I do not claim, broadly, as my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The seat A, having the bar B bolted thereto, and the umbrella G, in combination With the bar E. pivoted to the bar I), and having a slotted head, (I, the slotted guide-plate D, secured to the back, the tubular holder F, having its lower end bifurcated and pivoted to the bar E, a Sct-screwaud nut engaging the bar and slotted head, and the set-screws for securing the bar 1 and umbrella, respectively, substantially as herein described.
JOHN M. SHELTON.
