E. A. YOCUM. GOFPIN HANDLE GAGE.

HNL.
Elra 716cm m UNITED STATES PATENT Erica ELRA A. YOCUM, OF MENDON, OHIO.
COFFlN-HANDLE GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,030, dated J une 8, 1897.
Application filed June 25, 1896. Serial No. 596,955l (No model.)
?? al] whom it may concern/x Be it known that I, ELBA AYOCUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meudon, in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coffin-Handle Gages, ot which the following is a specification,
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in gages for adj usting handles to coins, casket-s, and the like, and has for its object to provide a device of this description by means of which handle-bars may be placed parallel with the lower edge of the casket, and which will also facilitate the placing of the entire number of handle-bars at like distances from the lower edge of the casket, thus rendering the operation of securing the bars very simple.
Vith these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction and operation in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in Which- Figure l is a perspective of my improved adjuster shown in position for gaging the placing of a handle-bar; and Fig. 2, a section through a portion of a casket, illustrating the method of applying my improvement thereto.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A represents a plate of such size and shape as to readily lit against the lower portion of the casket and provided with a thumb-screw B, by means of which it may be attached thereto. Projecting upward from this plate is a rod C, upon which slides a clamp D, adapted to be held in any position upon the rod by a set-screw E. Secured to the clamp in any convenient manner is a gage-plate F, terminating in right-angled brackets G, and these brackets have the vertical arms II, projecting upward therefrom.
I is ablock which is swivel'ed at J. lVithin the head of the screw and through this block passes the finger K, having a horizontal section L at the upper end thereof and being held in any adjustment bythe set-screw M. From this it will be seen that to place a handlebar in any position by my improvement it is only necessary to attach the plate A to the under side of the casket in such a position that its outer edge may project beyond the edge of said casket, by which means the gageplate will be held parallel to the lower edge thereof, and the height at which it is desired to secure the handle-bar is determined by the adjustment of the gage-plate upon the rod C, and when properly adjusted it may be held in position by the set-screWE, as before described. Then the gage-plate is thus attached, the handle-bar is placed upon the brackets and there clamped bythe finger K, when it is only necessary to secure the escutcheon by suitable screws, and When the adjuster is removed it is obvious that the handle-bar Will stand parallel with the lower edge of the casket. The remaining handlebars maybe likewise located, and if the gageplate remains in the last adjustment each handle-bar will bear the same relation to the lower edge of the casket.
I'Ieretofore much annoyance and loss of time has been occasioned in placing handlebars on coftins, caskets, and the like so that all may fall in the same horizont-al plane and be parallel with the lower edge of the casket, but my improvement entirely overcomes these disadvantages.
Having thus fullydescribed this invention, what is claimed as new and useful isl. An adjuster for Collin-handles consisting of a plate, a rod projecting upward from said plate, a clamp slidable on the rod, a gageplate carried by said clamp, a block swiveled to the set-screwr of said clamp, and a linger adj ustably secured in said block, as and for the purpose described.
2. An adjuster for coffin-handles, consisting of a plate, means for securing said plate to the bottom of a casket, a rod projecting upward from said plate, a clamp slidable on the rod, a gage-plate carried by said clamp,
said gage-plate having its ends bent at right In testimony whereof I have hereunto aangles to the bodgT portion, arms projecting fixed my signature in the presence of two su oupward from said ends, a block swivel'ed to scribing witnesses.
