SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,427, dated August 9, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN G. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Connersville, in the county of Fayette and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Vaterproof Burial-Cases; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of cases or receptacles used to inclose deceased persons or the coihns and caskets containing the same.

My invention consists in a case or receptacle of suitable proportions to receive the deceased person or the coffin or casket containing the same, which is provided with a cap or cover made air-tight and adapted to shut down over the case o1l receptacle closely, forming an air-chamber of the area inclosed inthe interior of the cover and the case, the air in which is compressed by the water rising in the space between the cover and the case until the atmospheric resistance in the air-chamber checks the rising of the water in the space.

In the drawings, Figure l. represents the case with the air-tight cap or cover in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same.

In Fig. l, A represents the air-tight cap or cover, and B the case or receptacle in which the deceased person or the coin or casket containing the same is placed.

In Fig. 2 like letters represent like parts, while C represents the space between the case or receptacle B and the air-tight cap or cover A.

out from the upper portion of the exterior of the case or receptacle B, and E represents the spring-lock as it is made fast to thenterior of the cap or cover A and catches beneath the rim or ange D. Said spring-locks may be removable and adjustable for convenience in shipment. As the Water rises around the structure the escape of the air from the interior of the case is cut off and the water can only ascend to that point where the resistance of the compressed air will meet and counteract its farther upward progress. The cap or cover being constructed air-tight, the atmospheric resistance is continuous and permanent and a waterproof burial receptacle is produced.

The tendency of the opposing forces to raise the cap or cover from its position by an increased volume or depth of water is obviated by the spring-locks E, which hold the said cover to the case B and prevent its displacement.

The case or receptacle is so constructed as to be air-tight and impervious to water, and when provided with the air-tight cap or cover arranged as already described it will be seen that a waterproof burial-case is the result.

Having thus fully described my said improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a waterproof burial-case, the air-tight cover A, the case B, made impervious to water, arranged to leave an air-space C between their vertical sides, the flange D, and the spring locking-lever E, constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose as set forth and described.
