UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. TIOKNER, OF BANOROFT, MICHIGAN.
BURIAL-CASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,249, dated August 22, 1882.
' Application filed May 11, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JEROME TIGKNER, of Bancroft, in the county of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collins and Burial Gaskets or Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a coffin, burial casket or case of novel construction, whereby provisionis made for raising or arranging in a more or less elevated position the head and upper portion of the dead body, and of adj usthaving a fiat bottom, b, which is interrupted or.
provided internally with an inclined head-rest, B, whereby the head and upper portion of the body is raised and the corpse made to occupy a more natural'and life-like position than if stretched out horizontally. Said head-rest may be made removable by fitting it loosely within the casket and providing it with a metal strap, 0, hinged at d, and having a lower stud or projection, c, which engages with any one of a series of holes, f, in a fixed bottom plate, whereby the head-rest may be set to occupy difl'erent inclinations.
The corpse may be laid on its side, and will have the appearance of reclining in an attitude of repose, as if on a couch or sofa, and maybe readily viewed from a great distance.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1 The combination, with the head-board a, bottom 12, and loose head-rest B, of the metal strap 0, hinged at d, and having a stud or projection, 6, engaging anyone of a series of holes, f, in the fixed bottom plate, 9, as shown and described.
JOHN JEROME TIGKNER.
