PATENT DEMON It. GOULD, OF OHESTERTOVVN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PHILANDER BALDIVIN, OF SAME PLACE.
COFFIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,035, dated November 11, 1884.
Application filed April 11, 1884.
T0 to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEMON R. GOULD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chestertown, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coffins, of which the following is a specification, reference being "bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
"My invention relates to caskets or coffins for burial purposes; and the object I have in view is to form one of metal, the body and lid of which will have an air-tight connection by suitable rubber packing, the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the casket complete and closed, and Fig. 2 a perspective of a portion of the metal strip which holds the packing.
In the figures, A represents the body, and, B the lid, of the casket, both of which are to be made of sheet metal pressed and shaped up in any of the well-known forms and ways, and the top being made to overlap the body.
O represents the usual window in the lid.
D represents a metal strip which surrounds the upper edge of the body of the casket. The centerof this strip is made U-shaped, the two sides of said strip being turned up, so as to be parallel with the body, as seen at w m, Fig. 2.
(2 represents a band of rubber, which issecured to the lid of the casket, and the lower edge .of which projects downward and enters the outer recess formed in the bended strip D, as
(No model.)
represented. WhenthestripDhasbeenplaced upon the edge of the casket and the top placed in position so that the lower edge of the band 61 will enter the recess in the strip, a bolt or screw,e, is passed through the overlapping portion of the lid and through the rubber and the strip d, as also the casket-body,-and the parts are thus securely fastened together. It will readily be seen that the screws or bolts 6 will compress the interposed rubber sufficiently to make an air-tight joint. construction I make a casket which will be durable and inexpensive, and one from which the air may be extracted and prevented from returning to promote decomposition.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
A metallic casket having an overlapping top resting on the turned-up edge of a U- shaped strip or strips, which engage over the upper edge of the body of the said casket, and provided with a sealing-band, of rubber or other material, interposed between the lower edge of the cover and the upper edge of the body, and resting in the upturned portion of the U-strip, the parts being securely fastened together by bolts or other means, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
CHAS. P. GoYL'E, JAMEs H. KELso.
