' BURIAL GASKET.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 30, 1922.
Application led September 10, 1921.v Serial No. 499,713.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. LEO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burial Caskets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is the provisionof a metallic burial casket possessed of lightness and durability together` with t-he capacity of hermetically enclosing a corpse and effectively excluding moisture.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in A the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed. In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure l is a side elevation of a burial casket constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same. Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the casket.
Figure 4 is a top plan View of the inner cover of the casket.
Figure 5 is a cross-section on the line 5--5 of Figure 1. Y
Figure 6 is an enlarged detail section illustrative of the novel construction.
Similar numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The body of my novel casket comprises outer and inner layers 1 and 2 of sheet steel vor other appropriate metal or alloy, and an the casket and to serve as insulation in preventinthe transmission of heat to said interior. he upper portion of the outer layer 1 is provided with an outward swell 4, and
is extended a slight distance higher than the upper edge vof the inner layer 2, as illustrated.
In theupper portion of the lilling 3 is a cavity 5. Y
edge of the outer layer 6, so that a, portion 9 ofthe lllng 8 will be opposed to the filling 3 when the outer cover is placed on the body. In this way the outer cover is padded and the closure thereof is lrendered ex-` tremely tight.
Ordinary clamp locks 10, not of myinvention, or any other appropriate fasteners may be employed" to secure the outer cover tothe body, Figures 3, 5 and 6, after which the said inner cover is hermetically sealed in position through the medium I,of plastic-sealing material 13 such as rubber cement which occupies the cavity 5 in the filling 3 and serves to effectively exclude ,airl from the interior of the casket.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing' that my novel casket is light in weight and at' the same time is extremely durable; also, that the.v casket is susceptible of being readily embellished with panels, name-plate and the like, and is adapted when desired to be clothcovered and to be interiorly trimmed in the same manner as an ordinary casket.
-I'have entered vinto a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact under# standing of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be. understood as confining myself to the said specific construction andrelative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as 4defined in my appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-.Patent` is In a casket, the combination with a body comprising outer and inner metallic layers,
and an interposed fillingI of cork between said layers vand arranged with its upper edge exposed, of a cover including outer and inner layers of metal, and an interposed filling of cork, said filling arranged outwardly beyond the inner layer to bear on the upper edge of' the body filling, an inner cover su perimposed on the body and having a transparent portion, and a seal of plastic Amaterial occupying a cavity in the body filling and receiving the edge of the inner cover.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
FRANCIS J. LEO.
