E. J. GREEN.
HAND PURSE. No`.471,000. PatentedMar. l5, 1892.
W] v T0 7i,k MQ U GQ/rum.; @W mm@ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN J. GREEN, OF VALPARAISO, INDIANA.
H A N D P U R S E SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,000, dated March 15, 1892.
Application tiled October 31, 1891. Serial No. 410,468. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN J GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Valparaiso, in the county of Porter and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Purses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to thatl class of purses which are adapted to be carried in the palm of the hand, especially by ladies while shopping or traveling, where it becomes necessary to frequently use money; and it has for its object to avoid the necessity of always opening and closing pocket-books and purses when car- Tied openly in the hand, and which also prevents their being snatched therefrom by evildisposed persons. f
To this end the invention consists in the employment of two or more rubber bands, one secured at each end of the purse, whereby the purse is secured in the palm of the hand, one by encirclingthe wrist and the other by encircling the middle finger of the hand.
In the accompanying drawing, to which ref erence is had, and which fully illustrates my invention, the figure represents a perspective View of my improved purse.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the purse, which may be of the form shown or of any suitable form, as fancy dictates, which is adapted to be adjusted to the palm of the hand. Around the mouth or open end of the purse is run a concealed rubber cord or band B, by which the mouth can be opened or closed for the purpose of putting in or taking out money when desired. To one side of thepurse, nearits mouth, is tacked or secured in any suitablegmanner a small portion of a rubber band C, said band being sufficiently large to encircle the wrist of the wearer, and at the bottom or closed end of the purse is secured another and smallerband D of a size sufficient only to encircle the middle tin ger of the hand. By the use of these bands C and D, respectively, the purse can be readily adjusted to the or taking the same therefrom when required for use. Importance is attached to this arrangement and use of t-he elastic bands secured at each end of the purse, a great advantage by such arrangement being derived therefrom not only in its ready adjustment to the palm of the hand, but also in the convenience and readiness by which access to the interior of the purse can be had at all times, it not being necessary to use the pocket every time occasion requires the use of money, and, further, by thus carrying the purse in the palm of the hand, where it is partially or wholly concealed from viewall temptations from evil-disposed persons to snatch it from the hand of the wearer are avoided, which is not the case with purses or pocket-books which are so commonly carried loosely in the hand by ladies when shopping or traveling from place to place.
This purse can be adjusted readily and quickly to the palm of the hand, either with or without gloves, when gloves are worn there being no necessity of removing the gloves when it becomes necessary to have access to the interior of the purse to place money therein or withdraw the same therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A purse constructed substantially as herein described, having an elastic band secured around its mouth for closing the same, a larger band secured to one side of the mouth by stitching and encircling the wrist, and a smaller band secured by similar means to the bottom 0r closed end of the purse, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ED\VIN J. GREEN.
