UNITED STATES PATENT @rricn.
EMILIE NAROISSA AMES, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DEVICE FOR CLOSING AND CARRYING PURSES, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,416, dated April 3, 1888.
Application filed September 15, 1887. Serial No. 249,813. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILIE NARCISSA AMEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of San Francisco, and in the State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Closing and Carrying Purses, Hand-Bags, 850., having a frame at the top or opening; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters of reference marked thereon, male ing a part of this specification.
My invention relates to adevice whereby a purse, hand-bag, or any similar article having a frame at the top or opening is closed and carried. I accomplish this by means of a chain or cord passing through holes of proper size and properly ire-enforced near the top or opening of the purse or other article to which my device is attached.
Heretofore purses and other similar articles have had their handles attached to one side of the opening and have been kept closed by a clasp or other suitable device, and in carrying the purse the clasp oftentimes comes unfustened, and being supported only on one side the contents of the purse would drop out.
My invention is intended to obviate this objection, and I accomplish this by the means In .purses, hand-bags, and other similar arti cles I make a hole near each end thereof and near the edges of the side that opens. Through these holes I run a small chain or cord of (ionble the length to form a suitable handle and unite the ends thereof. The holes through which the chain or cord passes should be suitably re-enforced by eyelets or other suitable device to prevent wear and give strength. This is not indispensable.
The operation of my device is as follows: The purse or other article being open, you pick the same up by the chain or cord, and as the cord or chain passes through both sides it immediately closes the purse, and as the purse is carried by the chain or cord it prevents the same from coming open.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As a new article of manufacture, a purse, hand-bag, or other similar article having a frame at the top or opening with a cord or chain for a handle passing through holes in each upper end of the several compartments and through the closing-flap and near the end and top or opening to close the same when picked up by it and to keep it closed when carried by it, substantially as described herein.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
EMILIE NAROISSA AMES.
