SACK FOR FRUIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1914.
Application filed November 17,1913. Serial 110. 801,522.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MATTHEW A. Zo nnK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Old Mission, in the county of Grand Traverse, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sacks for Fruit; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The presentinvention is directed to improvements in sacks for fruit, and has for its object to so construct an article of this character that the same can be readily attached or detached from the body of the picker.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sack of this character so constructed that when in place upon the person the fruit can be picked by hand and delivered to the sack without the necessity of the picker leaning over and changing the posi tion of his arms to deposit the fruit in the sack.
With these and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sack. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. i 1s a detail View of the cuff.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the sack, which is formed from any suitable fabric, the lower end of which is provided with a mouth 2, said mouth being closed when the sack is in operation by the draw strings 3 which pass through the rings 4: attached adjacent the edge of the mouth 2. The draw strings 3 are provided with strap sections 5, which are buckled together upon the back of the wearer so that the draw strings will hold the mouth 2 closed during the picking operation, but it will be of course understood that when it is desired to empty the contents of the sack it is only necessary to disengage the strap sections 5, thus permitting the mouth to open.
Connected to the sides of the sack 1 are fabric sleeve sections 6, which have their inner ends opening into the sack 1 so that the picked fruit may readily enter the sack.
Outer. sleeve sections 7 are provided and have their inner ends attached to the outer ends of the sleeve sections 6 by gussets 8 which permit free independent movement of the sleeve sections.
The outer ends of the sleeve sections 6 and 7 are provided with strap sections 9 and 10, respectively, the strap sections 9 being designed to engage the users arm at points adjacent the elbows, while the strap sections 10 engage the wrists ofthe user so that the sections 6 and 7 will hang below the arms during the picking operation.
WVire rings 11 are attached to the sack at the points where the sleeve sections 6 open thereinto so that the inner ends of said sections will be at all times stretched to permit free passage of the fruit therefrom into the sack. Rings 12 are also provided in the outer ends of the sleeve sections 6, and rings 13 are provided for the inner ends of the sleeve sections 7 so that the sections will remain in condition to permit free passage of the fruit therethrough.
In the outer ends of the sleeve sections 7 are metallic cufls 14, the outer ends of which have beveled edges 15 so that the bottoms 16 of the cuffs will be positioned under the hands of the picker so that the picked fruit will drop upon the bottoms 16' and be guided into the sleeve sections, and thence into thesack 1. hecuifs 15 are provided upon their upper surfaces with metallic strips 17 which are stitched interiorly of the sleeve sections 7, and as the strips 17 extend under the arms of the picker the sleeve sections 7 will be prevented from folding.
Secured to the upper edge of the sack 1 are shoulder engaging loops 18, the same being connected by front andrear strips 19 and 20, which engage the chest and back of the wearer, respectively, said strips serving to prevent slipping of the loops 18 from engagement with the shoulder so that the loops will properly hold the sack in place upon the wearer.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the device is in place upon the body of a person that the sleeve sections 6 and 7 may be moved with the arms of the picker so that the picked fruit can be released from the hand of the picker and de posited in the sack 1.
What is claimed is A device for picking fruit, comprising a 10 mouth and having strap sections connected thereto for engaging around the body of the wearer to operate the draw strings to close said mouth.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
MATTHEW A. ZOULEK.
