ATTORNEYS United States Patent O WINDOW WELL CDVER John B. Krelwitz, West Allis, Wis.
Application March 4, 1955, Serial No. 492,217
1 Claim. (Cl. 2li-1) This invention relates to a cover for a window well or the like.
It is an object of this invention to provide a window well cover to exclude leaves or other kinds of debris from falling into and collecting in the Window well.
Another object of this invention is to provide a window well cover which may or may not be hingedly mounted on its respective windows and will apply the cover on the well while permitting light and air to enter into the window adjacent to the well.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a transverse section of a window well cover constructed according to an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the outer side of my window well cover, the building and its adjacent window well being partly broken away and partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view, partly broken away and partly in section, of this window well cover.
Heretofore, and at the present time, window wells have been provided in buildings adjacent to a window in the lower end of the building extending and opening into the yard or ground adjacent to the building. Such wells are susceptible for the collection of leaves and other debris at al1 times and I have provided a window well cover for excluding leaves and such debris from the building well while the window well cover is `applied to the window well.
Referring now to the drawings the numeral designates generally a window well cover constructed according to an embodiment of my invention and applied adjacent to a window in a building adjacent to the ground in which the building is built.
The window Well 10 is adapted to engage the outer surface of a building wall 11 having the window `12` formed in the building wall adjacent to the ground at the lower end of the building.
The building is provided with a window well 14 on one side thereof on which the cover for the window well is adapted to be applied.
The window well 14 is provided with a lower or bottom wall 15 having an upstanding outer wall 16 formed integral therewith and spaced outwardly from the building wall 11 as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The window well cover 10 is particularly adapted to close and open the upper end of the window well 14 and is engageable with the upper surface of the building wall 11.
The window well cover 10 is provided with a substantially semi-circular bottom sheet 18 having holes 19 therein so that air or possibly moisture may enter the building well below the window well cover 10.
The window well cover 10 is additionally provided with a top sheet 20, being formed of substantially the same material as the bottom sheet 18 also semi-circular in configuration to cover the bottom wall 18 when the cover 10 is closed.
The entire window well cover 10 is hingedly mounted on the building by a hinge leaf 21, secured to the upper surface of the top sheet 20, and a lower hinge leaf 22 secured to the building wall 11. A depending peripheral ange 24 depends from the top sheet 20, adjacent to the periphery of the top sheet, being bolted, riveted or otherwise formed with the top sheet. The depending flange 24 is formed with holes 25 therethrough adjacent to the edge of the flange which is secured to the top sheet 20. The hinge pin 26 engages through the hinge barrels carried by the hinge leaf 21 on the top sheet 20 and through the hinge leaf 25 carried by the building wall 11. The iiange 24, while depending from the top sheet 20 is engageable with the upper edge of the window well 14 so that the window well is provided with some means, as the cover, for excluding all sorts ofleaves and refuse from collecting within the window well.
All in all the entire window well cover 10 is inclined downwardly and outwardly from the building, having the upstanding building wall 11, so that any moisture on the upper surface of the window well cover will drain downwardly and outwardly from the window well rather than collect therein.
In the use and operation of the window well cover described above, the window well is adapted to be located on the outer side of a window of a building and the window well cover will exclude the collection of any dirt or leaves in the building well. The window well cover may either be hingedly mounted on the building or otherwise secured to the upper open end of the building well adjacent to the window having such a window well on the outer side thereof.
While the speciiic details of one embodiment of this invention have been herein shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A window well cover comprising an upper transparent sheet formed of relatively rigid transparent material and lhaving a substantially semi-circular configuration, an arcuate flange xed to the lower side of said sheet and disposed inwardly from the marginal edge of said sheet, said flange having openings adjacent the upper edge thereof, a depending rear ange extending downwardly from the rear straight edge of said sheet and connected to the rear ends of said arcuate flange, said rear flange having a width less than said arcuate flange, and a perforate transparent sheet fixed between said flanges and parallel with said first named sheet.
